LEVI
I was sixteen years old the first time I really and truly contemplated finding
a way to rip out my brother, Jack’s, vocal cords.
Twenty-four years later, I was contemplating it for what had to be the
millionth time.
“You’re the CEO now, Levi,” Jack lectured, his voice full of barely
contained irritation. “I’m over here trying to get these companies up and
running out here and yet I’m still fielding calls that you should be handling!
You’re running the company now; you’re supposed to be keeping the Barron
name clean and ensuring that this shit doesn’t happen!”
I snorted, getting up from my office chair and stretching as I fought the
urge to roll my eyes at his dramatics.
“You’re in the Caribbean, Jack, you need to learn how to relax.” Or shut
up. One of the two. When he got going, it was almost like he didn’t even
need to breathe. “Jamaica and Barbados are supposed to be laid back, not
uptight. Become one with your surroundings,” I joked dryly, flicking a piece
of lint off of my suit and crossing from behind my desk over to the windows
overlooking the front of the company.
“I’m spending plenty of time being laid back,” Jack griped. “One thing
I’m not going to be laid back about though. My money and my company.”
“Our company,” I corrected distractedly, staring out of the wall of
windows down onto the busy streets below.
I’d paid good money to ensure my office had the wall of windows I was
standing in front of. There was something electric about being able to see as
far as I was from where I stood, something thrilling in the ability to look
down and see all of those people so many stories below me hurrying about
like ants under a microscope.
Staten Island, New York, had always had a singular sort of charm- the
lush greenery that had been bled back into the city interspersed with the
bright blue of the water in the distance, an interworking web of canals and
streets both.
“Yeah, yeah. Our company so long as I don’t have to remove you as
CEO,” Jack snorted, his words followed by a ragged sigh. “You know how I
feel about publicity.”
“Ah, right, any publicity is good publicity,” I answered drolly, biting back
a grin at the growl I heard come through the phone pressed to my ear.
“Absolutely not that,” Jack snapped. “I swear to God, Levi if another
scandal breaks out…”
The worry in my brother’s voice might have been amusing if it weren’t
for the bodies my gaze had zeroed in on approaching the building. Or, rather,
the over-the-top Ferrari that I recognized them getting out of.
“Fuck,” I muttered, my voice finally catching up to my brother’s
irritation.
“What?” Jack asked worriedly, a note of exhaustion creeping into his
tone. “Fuck, what? You can’t answer my statement like that and then go
silent, Levi. What new scandal do I have to worry about now?”
“While I’m sure Mike and Henry could be called scandalous, they aren’t
in and of themselves a scandal,” I quipped, though there was less amusement
than there was caution in my tone and I knew Jack picked up on it.
“Mike and Henry, your friends Mike and Henry?” Jack clarified,
sounding only marginally less tense.
