Thirteen Years Ago
Thorn
It didn’t matter how many times Thorn’s father failed to turn iron into gold;
he was determined not to give up. Thorn never minded that most of her time
was spent keeping him company as he worked, even though she was only
five and all the other children her age in the town were spending the long,
hot summer days playing outside.

Thorn loved her father, and she loved his work. The time they spent
together was precious to her, even if none of the precious metal was ever
created. To her, he was a magician.

“Thorn,” her father said, decidedly distracted by the searing heat of a
flame he was currently only just managing to control. “Can you hand me
the… the thingie… the…”
Nobody else would have known what her father meant, but Thorn did.
She handed her father the heavy iron tongs, and, with careful hands, he
removed a reinforced, rounded glass flask full of a molten liquid from
where it had been held over the fire within a stone ring.

His hands were not, in fact, quite as careful as they used to be, for they
shook slightly as he put pressure on the tongs. Her heart pounded as she
watched her father with barely contained anxiety as he transported the flask
to a charred wooden workbench that was four inches thick. But he did not
spill a single drop of the contents of the flask, despite the waver in his
hands. Her father always took care when she was with him.

“What did you change in the experiment this time, Papa?” she asked,
curious eyes watching the liquid inside the flask as it glowed white, though
she knew that wouldn’t be the end color. As the contents cooled down
slowly, the success of his trial would be exposed to all.

She kicked her feet as sweat ran down her back. They spent their days
in his workshop as he created product after product. While he still hadn’t
managed to make gold, her father had designed all sorts of interesting
gadgets. Neither Thorn nor her father were the kind of people to get
discouraged when things didn’t go their way. A sunny summer’s evening
walk through town would quickly assuage their disappointment, and then
they would brainstorm ideas to try to turn their next dastardly block of iron
into glittering gold.

Thorn narrowed her eyes at the liquid. Something was different.
“I changed one of the reagents to…” Thorn’s father trailed off, his eyes
growing wide as he gaped at the flask.

In a flash of motion, he grabbed a small hammer and sharply tapped the
flask, causing the glass to shatter. Thorn winced at the sound.

“You broke it, Papa!” Her attention lifted from the shattered glass on the
table to the softened disc of semi-solid metal. But not just any metal. Gold.
Gold!
“Papa, you did it!” Thorn cried in excitement, jumping to her feet.
Her father dropped his tongs, swept her into his arms, and spun her
around the workshop, his salt-and-pepper hair tickling her cheek.
