Travis turned away from the cliff edge as he heard footsteps
approaching. Lennex and Selris stood some twenty feet from him. Their
faces visible via his dark vision.
“Where’s Malistith?” asked Travis.
“Gone,” replied Lennex. “He and Larenthian went to The Lesterlands
to recruit builders.”
“Why have you not yet fled from this island?” asked Travis.
“He marked us before he left,” said Selris. “Now he’ll know our
location for the next thirty-six hours.”
Travis frowned. “I’m sorry.”
“There’s no chance you learned how to teleport while taking someone
else with you, is there?” asked Selris.
“I’m afraid not.”
“Where did you go? And why did you come back?” asked Lennex.
“Jervis abducted me as he fled from the island, but I escaped and
teleported to this shrine. I assume Malistith constructed it before leaving?”
Selris nodded. “You should leave before he returns and marks you as
he has us.”
“I wish I could, but I need him to teach me how to construct shrines.
After he does I’ll be on my way. Though I promise, I will find a way to free
you both.”
Lennex’s face remained impassive while Selris smiled slightly.
“I watched him construct that shrine,” said Lennex. “I would tell you
how to before he returns, in exchange you must promise to deliver a
message from me to an inquisitor named David Adili. You may look for
him at his family’s seat in Stormhold.”
Travis’s face lit up. This was perfect! Now he could leave without
worrying about dealing with Malistith! He would of course return one day,
and on that day he would kill the man whose ritual had resulted in his
friend’s death.
“What’s the message?”
“Tell him I am imperiled on this island, and tell him that I am calling in
the favor he owes me.”
“I will.”
Lennex turned and Travis followed him to the shrine.
“The wood is natural whitewood, staked into the ground to form the
exterior with the top left open. The markings are simple star runes, search
through a dozen or so libraries and you should find a book which will guide
you in how to create them. Once the wood is staked and the markings are
applied you need only imbue the structure with your mana to sanctify it.
Thus creating a shrine to your star God.”
“Thank you, and I promise that I will deliver your message.”
Lennex made eye contact with him. “I’ll hold you to that. Malistith
must be ended, I have only witnessed power such as his thrice before, once
by The King. Ounce by the Valien’s arch blood mage, and once by a demon
whom it took the combined strength of sixty inquisitors to vanquish.”
Travis nodded. “I agree.”
Then he closed his eyes, envisioning the image of a whitewood tree as
he stepped back and into the astral. His eyes opened as he shot through the
astral. He was surrounded by stars, so many stars. Then he was stepping
forward and toward the whitewood, his legs giving out beneath him as he
collapsed in front of it.
