“All hail the conquering graduates!”
As the guests cheer my toast, I catch sight of Jameson Reynolds
scowling at me from across the other end of the pool. Typical. My
brother’s friend and business partner is always on anti-fun patrol around
me.
“For an older guy, he is really hot. No wonder you’ve got a crush on
him.”
“Stop staring, he’s not that old and I don’t have a crush,” I tell my best
friend, Nevaeh.
Yes, he is hot with those smoldering gray eyes and that undeniable
badass vibe but crushes are for kids. I’m twenty-two now. My crush on
Jameson? Ancient history.
I take another shot, the strong liquor burning its way down my throat
and leaving a smoky aftertaste. A reckless heat pools in my belly as I check
to see if Jameson’s still watching me when a warm hand lands lightly on my
shoulder.
“Not too much scotch, mia cara.” Turning, I find my older brother
Anthony struggling not to glower at everyone else. He was not delighted to
host a college graduation party this size but he finally caved with enough
pleading. “You’ll regret it in the morning.”
I snort at the warning – hello, it’s graduation! – but I love him to bits
even when he’s being a big, grumbly, overprotective bear. “Last one, I
promise.”
His smirk suggests he doesn’t believe me. He’s no idiot. “Grace and I
are going to bed. I’ll show the professor out before I go. Jameson’s team
will be sure all these kids make it safely home tonight.”
My initial retort – ‘We’re not children!’ – dies on my tongue. There’s
over a decade’s difference in age between me and Anthony. I know he just
wants to protect me and for everyone to party safely.
Rising to my tiptoes, I kiss his cheek and thank him for everything.
“And, I mean everything, Anthony.” I wouldn’t have made it to this day
without him.
Grace comes over to give me a hug goodnight. My brother’s fiancée
is the sweetest woman alive and the best sister I could ever ask for. Plus,
she helped me sway Anthony to host this party. “We’re very proud of you,
Kiara. Don’t forget we have lunch and spa plans tomorrow,” she reminds
me gently, eyeing the shot glass I’m still holding. “Drink some water
before bed.”
I plan to but, once they’re out of sight, one of the guys is suggesting
more drinks. Looking across the pool again, I see Jameson still standing
there like a sentry… and glaring. He was probably hoping Anthony would
give me a good scolding and send me to bed.
Shooting him a cheeky wink, I knock back another shot and start to
dance with my friends. This is my night to celebrate.

This is my night to have a headache and feel a little woozy.
The party’s grown quieter, mostly broken up into smaller groups on
the terraced courtyards of our back lawn which leads down to the bay.
Some guys are playing a sloppy game of pick-up soccer by the pool. I hope
no one winds up trampling Grace’s veggie patch.
