If Kylie screamed, pedestrians on the sidewalk far below would look up
and see her with her arms and legs locked around Micah as he rappelled
down the side of a four-story office building in downtown Philadelphia.
Kylie Miller (for that was the name she was using) clung to Micah Shine
(for that was the name he had told her, the liar) as they dangled four stories
above the sidewalk, rappelling down the side of the Philadelphia building.
Chilly autumn wind needled through her clothes.
Her teeth ground together, and her hands cramped. The leather of the
harness he wore bit her fingers and palms because she was holding on for her
life, even though he’d bound her against his broad chest with a thick strap
that was cutting into her waist under her ribcage. The bundles of cash she’d
stuffed down her shirt poked between her ribs.
Micah bounced off the wall with his legs and held the rope, controlling
their descent.
Kylie shook her head, trying to will or pray herself into any other
situation, and buried her face in his strong shoulder.
A wide backpack Micah wore, which held two priceless paintings,
bonked the side of her face, bruising her cheekbone.
The thin nylon rope slid through Micah’s hands and the clips on his chest
and stomach. Kylie was hanging off Micah’s side like a sideways backpack
as he kicked off the wall.
Micah grinned at her as they fell, swaying slowly in the cutting October
breeze. His eyes sparkled blue and teal in the fading sunset.
Micah kissed her as they descended, his mouth slanted over hers. The
gentle suction from his soft lips on hers tingled down her stomach and shot
nervous energy all the way to Kylie’s toes.
He broke it off, a wild excitement lighting up his eyes, and he tilted his
head to the side to watch the ground rushing toward them.
She bugged her eyes at him, silently asking, Oh my God, are you
goddamned kidding me? But he didn’t look back at her again.
When Kylie craned her head to see above them, Salvatore Grande had
stuck his head out of the broken-out window, a black silhouette against the
darkening sky. He pointed down at them.
“Micah,” she whispered. “We’d better hurry.”
More heads emerged from the window.
Male yelling echoed off the brick building across the narrow street.
Thin arms poked out of the window above, arms that terminated in fists
spiky with the barrels of handguns.
Kylie gasped, “Micah—”
“Brace.”
