Keith sat across from the blonde-haired hottie in the restaurant. Trevor’s
dating profile had said that he was twenty-eight, but this kid didn’t look a
day older than twenty-two. Keith figured he was pushing nearly ten years
older than this kid, but the pretty boy sitting across from him didn’t seem to
mind. The younger guys that he found on the dating apps usually landed in
one of two categories.
Category one. Wet behind the ears, listless, and looking for a hook up. The
kid had probably grown up around people that didn’t care he was gay. Freethinking, gender-neutral progressives that celebrated instead of condemned.
Tomorrow the kid would move on and continue swiping right or swiping
left, because nothing could hold his short attention span. It didn’t seem
likely that the kid could be a category two—so far in the closet he was still
denying who he was, dying to break out of his shell. “What do you do for a
living, Trevor?”
“I’m a social media influencer.”
Keith barked out a laugh and Trevor scowled. “Oh,god, you’re serious?”
“I haven’t decided what I want to do with my life yet.”
Of. Freaking. Course.
Trevor continued. “The corporate world seems so stifling. My passions
change for each season of my life.”
“You don’t say, huh, Trevor?” Keith tried to not roll his eyes. So, no
splitting the check tonight.
“You can call me Trev.”
I’d rather not.
“Here is the house wine, sir,” the waiter said to Keith as he filled his glass.
His date reached for his glass and he held his breath. Trevor sat there,
spinning and swirling, spinning, swirling, and sniffing until Keith sprouted
some grey hair waiting so long for him to taste it. He was pretty sure Trev
wouldn’t know the difference between a $75 Bordeaux or a six-dollar bottle
from the grocery store.
Stop showing off.
The waiter cleared his throat.
Trevor curled his nose and sniffed it again. Finally, at long last, he took a
sip and let out a long breath. “This is acceptable.”
Acceptable? The waiter’s brow rose slightly as he caught Keith’s eye. Even
this fella seemed to know this date was a mistake.
“We will take the bottle; thank you.” Keith smiled pleasantly at the server
who would be getting a generous tip. The man deserved it. This Trevor kid
needed to learn some manners.
Dinner arrived not long after, saving him from having to create more small
talk with his awful date. But the nightmare wasn’t over. The kid frowned as
he cut into his meat. Oh god, what now?
“This is far too rare. It’s still bleeding.”
No, those are the juices, you dumb-fuck.
“It’s prime rib, Trevor.” His date had tried to order like he had some class,
but it was now apparent that he had no idea what prime rib actually was.
“It’s smoked; therefore, it has the appearance of pink.
