Dani Rosetti heard her phone ringing and couldn’t remember where she’d
left it. She figured it was probably in the kitchen or in her office, so she
hurried down the hall, hoping she could find it before the ringing ended.
She saw it on her desk and grabbed it just in time. “This is Dani
Rosetti,” she said.
“Miss Rosetti, this is Leticia Burns. I’m sure you’ve heard of my
husband, Raymond Burns.”
What a weird way to start out a telephone conversation, Dani
thought. I wonder where this is going?
“As a matter of fact, I don’t think I have,” Dani answered.
“Impossible,” the voice on the other end of the line said. “He’s only
been written up as the most successful hedge fund manager in history. I’m
sure if you saw his picture, you’d recognize him,” Leticia said.
“I probably would, but I’m not very knowledgeable about hedge
funds and things like that. My world pretty much revolves around food and
my family,” Dani said.
“Well, you probably should broaden your scope,” Leticia sniffed.
“But I didn’t call you to talk about Raymond. I just wanted you to know
who I am.”
As a matter of fact, Leticia, I’m getting a very good idea of who you
are, Dani thought.
“What can I do for you, Leticia?”
“I don’t really know if you can do anything for me. My husband is
planning a dinner party at our home here in Newport Beach. We live on the
golf course at Big Canyon Country Club, actually it’s the largest home on
the golf course, and I’m calling several chefs about catering the dinner. You
were recommended by a friend of mine who watched some of your
television shows.”
“Please thank the person for me,” Dani said. “How many people
would be at the dinner?”
“My husband is the president of the Men’s Club at Big Canyon
Country Club. He’s hosting a golf tournament at the club and the dinner
party would follow it. Traditionally the golf dinners are held at the Big
Canyon Country Club, but our home is so spectacular he wanted to hold the
dinner here.
“We can easily seat fifty on our patio which is where Raymond would
like to have the dinner. Since our home is such a showplace, I mean
everyone who comes here thinks that, he wants to have a cocktail party in
the family and living rooms prior to going outside to dinner.”
“I see,” Dani said. “So you would want appetizers for your cocktail
party as well as a sit-down dinner for fifty. Is that correct?”
“Yes. We would provide wine. We have a wine cellar, actually it’s
quite an extensive wine cellar that takes up the whole basement area. It’s
stocked annually by a Wine Master Raymond hired. We probably have the
best wines of any private home in the United States. It costs a great deal to
maintain, but money is not an object for us.”
“And when would this event be?”
“It will be held on Sunday, the 27
th of September,” Leticia said. “I
have called several caterers, as I mentioned, and I would want you to come
