A beach on the Greek island of Delos
The next day
Jana Peters took another photo of the Temple of Poseidon, capturing the
stone foundations of the wall and the few weathered marble columns that
still stood. It was one of the many fascinating sites on what was, in ancient
times, the holiest island for Greek civilization.
For the past few days, she and Jacob had been relaxing on this tiny
island in the Cyclades, an archipelago in the brilliantly blue Aegean. It was
three weeks since their last mission, and Jacob had shown a remarkable
ability to heal. The bruises and cuts he had suffered at the hands of his
torturers had all vanished, and his cracked ribs didn’t pain him anymore.
Only his shoulder, where he had suffered a gunshot wound, was still a bit
stiff.
They had explored, hand in hand, all the archaeological sites on this
lovely little island that had seen so many cultures—the Minoan fountain
and the temple of Artemis, the rich palace mosaics, and the temple of Isis—
enjoying a well-earned vacation at taxpayer expense. After what they had
been through, they needed to get away, and an archaeological jewel that
also happened to be remote with a permanent population of just 24 was the
perfect choice. And all under an azure sky surrounded by sparkling sea.
Jacob had even managed to pretend more than a casual interest in all
these wonders. Visiting the temple of Poseidon was a treat for him because
it was right on the beach where he now lay, soaking up rays far out of sight
of prying eyes that might be curious as to why his body bore so many scars.
Jana looked at him and smiled, but that smile hid a shadow. Her father,
Aaron, who they had both long assumed to be dead, had saved them in
Pakistan. From there they had escaped, first to the Gulf, and then here.
The
first few days in Athens had been chaotic, with Jacob in a military hospital
recovering and all three of them having to go through extensive debriefing.
There had been little time for a heart-to-heart talk.
Afterwards, her father had pulled her aside.
“I know you have a million questions, and I will eventually answer
them all, but right now I have to go to Washington.”
“Washington!” She felt like the bottom was falling out of her soul. She
had just retrieved him from the dead, and now he was going on another
trip?
“The top brass need me to fill them in on a few things, as I’m sure you
can imagine. I am so sorry, but listen,”—at this point he held both her hands
and looked straight into her eyes—“I will come back in a few days’ time
and we will talk about everything. Nothing will stop me from doing that,
not even the CIA.”
Despite all the past disappointments, despite all the broken promises,
this time she believed him.
He had come back from the dead. That gave him a second chance in her
eyes.
But she couldn’t help feeling a tremor of worry, a note of doubt in the
anticipation she felt for this day.
