Today should be a happy day. Her daughter, Amina, was turning five
years old. Family and friends surrounded them as they celebrated. Smiles
were on everyone’s faces, and laughter filled the air. The sun was shining
high in the sky, with only a dusting of clouds. Everything was perfect.
Today should be a happy day.
But as Shandra lifted her gaze to the man standing off to the side,
away from the crowd of people who all seemed to be enjoying themselves,
her heart clenched.
Leonardo Mannetti. Leo, to his friends and family… stood by
himself. The look on his face was fierce. Grumpy. Annoyed. But she wasn’t
concerned. That’s just who he was. He was always around, but never put
himself front and center. Even when she had been shot and laid up in the
hospital, he was always around. Hovering. Making sure she was okay. That
her every need was taken care of.
Those intense green eyes would stare at her, capturing her in his
gaze, as if daring her to look away. Half the time, the man did not even
speak to her. But whenever she opened her eyes while lying in that hospital
bed, he would be there. Watching. Waiting. Sometimes, he would stand over
her. Other times, he’d be sitting in the hospital chair next to her bed. During
that time, he became such a presence in her life. So much so, that even now,
whenever she woke in the morning, she half-expected him to be there.
But he never was.
Her thoughts were interrupted as a group of children ran past her.
Amina leading the bunch. They ran towards Leo, and while Shandra wanted
to intervene, she was too far away to do anything without making a scene.
As the children surrounded Leo, her breath caught in her chest.
Not that she was concerned about his reaction. Amina had grown
close to Leo over the past year, and her little girl looked up to the man as if
he had always been a part of her young life. He was her Leo the Lion. At
least that was what she called him when pleading with the big man to do
something for her, or play a game, or buy her ice cream.
Part of her wished Amina hadn’t become so attached to him. Then
again, it was hard not to when the man was always around. Not taking her
eyes off the scene in front of her, Shandra couldn’t help the smile that came
over her lips at what happened next.
Leo leaned down and grabbed Amina around the waist before
settling her in his powerful arms. A smile came over his face as Amina
whispered something in his ear. He then said something to the group of kids
that had all of them looking up at him with shock and awe. Amina had a
smirk on her lips and nodded her head as if to tell them, ‘See, I told you.’
A soft touch on Shandra’s arm had her turning to the person next to
her. “Hey preggo,” she greeted her friend Camille with a large smile and a
hug. “I was wondering when your greedy husband was going to let you out
of his sight.”
