Sabina
thought I had a chance to get away, but that was just a fairytale dream.
The reality is much crueler.
And my reality is coming right for me.
Dimitri is stalking toward me through the train station, his sights set on
me.
I turn to Manuel, who I really believed was helping me. “You called him?
How could you?”
Manuel doesn’t look at me. “He approached me yesterday and told me
that if you ever came to Amy, I was supposed to send you back to him. He
offered me a lot of money for it.”
“So, you’d sell me over for money?” My panic is rising.
“He threatened me,” he hisses. “He threatened to kill Amy and me if I
didn’t return you to him. When you showed up on Amy’s doorstep, I knew
what I had to do.”
“Then why not just take me back? Why help me to the train station and
buy me a ticket?”
“Because I couldn’t risk you running away. I needed you someplace he’d
be able to get you and I’d be alright. I’m sorry, Sabina, but I’m not dying for
you.”
My mouth drops open. I always knew Manuel was a jerk. I get him
wanting to keep Amy safe, but giving me right back to my kidnapper is cruel.
I tasted freedom on my tongue, and now, all I can taste is hopelessness.
Dimitri is getting closer. Once he reaches me, that’s it. I’m done. I’ll be
forced to marry him and spend the rest of my life stuck by his side.
So, I make a quick decision.
I run.
I run straight for the train, which is now boarding. I run onto it and down
the car length. When I look out the window, I see Dimitri running after me.
But he doesn’t have a ticket. He can’t get on.
I keep moving down the car, pushing past people as they give me dirty
looks. Screw them. I’m in danger. I don’t have time to care what strangers
think.
When I look back outside, I see Dimitri stopped at the train entrance.
He’s talking to the ticket taker, an intense look on his face. I know that
intense look is reserved for me. The moment Dimitri gets me, I’ll never know
freedom again.
I’m finally within reach of the door to the next car. I have to squeeze past
people as they come toward me. “Excuse me,” I mutter, pushing past them.
“I’m in a hurry. Please move.”
A woman stops before me as she sets her bag on a seat. She’s taking up
the aisle as she digs through her bag.
“Can you please move?” I ask her. My voice is frantic.
She shoots me a look. “Wait your turn.”
I huff. “You’re taking up the entire aisle. Please move.”
“Learn some manners,” she snaps back.
