MOIRA
WHEN I PUSH through the front doors of Town Hall, I’m ready to go to battle.
My territory is under attack.
Sort of. No one has shown up on the shores in Viking boats, attempting to
pillage my village, or convinced me to wheel a giant wooden horse behind
my protective walls.
This assault is subtler but an attack all the same.
Despite my simmering anger, I keep a professionally pleasant smile on
my face as I walk through the grandest building in Folk Haven. Not that
there’s much competition. Tucked away in the forests of northeastern
Georgia, this small town boasts few impressive buildings, tending to tilt
toward quaint. But Town Hall tries to put on airs with its towering ceilings
and ornate molding and polished marble floors. Wood would have suited the
space fine, but the founders of Folk Haven had a point to prove.
To whom? I’m still not sure.
“Heya, Moira. Council meeting today?” The greeting comes as I pass by
a cracked door.
I pause long enough to peek my head in, meeting the kind eyes of
Samantha, police chief and mermaid. That second fact makes her one of my
constituents.
“It is. We’re having two petitioners come to speak at nine thirty. If they
accidentally wander in here, can you point them our way?”
“Will do. Do I know them?” Normally, the question would be laughable.
With a town this small, it’s hard not to know everyone, especially when you
work in a public office.
But this meeting is odd for more than one reason.
“Not sure. Two witches from out of town. They haven’t been here long.
Names are Morgana and Amethyst.” My eyes flit down to the meeting
agenda I hastily printed this morning, immediately regretting the glance when
I re-read the last-minute add-on.
“Witch names if I ever heard them.” The mermaid snorts as she
absentmindedly drags her fingers through inch-long blonde strands. A habit
she’s had since grade school, although back then, her tresses grew past her
waist. I can still remember how her milk-pale skin would flush a blotchy red
when our classmates called her Rapunzel. No one is brave enough to do so
now that she’s got a gun hooked to her belt. “I’ll keep an eye out. I’m on the
desk till the rest of the slackers show up.”
The rest referring to the three other police officers Folk Haven has. A tiny
force for a tiny town.
Not that I’m complaining.
Less police means less people to catch me after I murder Levi Abadi for
sticking my business on The Council agenda.
“Thanks.” I manage to keep my renewed anger out of my voice as I head
farther into the building to the room reserved the first Monday of each month
for the Folk Haven Mythic Council meeting.
