Kuh. Kuh. Hhhh kuh. Hhhh. Kuh. God my chest hurts. Hhhh kuh. I think
someone is sitting on me. “Kuh. Kuh!”
I try to reach up to push them away but I can’t move my arms or hands.
I hear voices but nothing makes sense.
“Is she going to be ok? We found her. We watched as she rolled in on
the waves,” a female voice explains.
“Please stand back, give the EMT room to tend to her. Do you know
her?” an impatient male voice responds.
“I’ve seen her before. She works at the Sandy Sipper Bar. Down the
beach near the canal.”
“Can you tell me what you saw and heard?”
“We were, ah—making out on the beach. The waves were coming in
and we heard a boat engine start up but we never saw lights. We grabbed
our clothes and were gonna leave when we saw what we thought was a log
rolling in with the waves. When we got closer, we saw it had legs. It was a
person—her. Then we realized she had a hood over her head and her arms
were tied behind her. We dragged her away from the water and I called the
police while my boyfriend started CPR.”
“Did you keep the cord and hood?”
“Yes. I’ll get them.”
“Wait, do you know her name?”
“Ny… something. I have a friend who will know. I’ll call her.”
I can’t stand the pressure on my chest any longer. “Get-kuh-off-kuh me!
Can’t-kuh kuh-breathe.”
“Miss, you almost drowned. I’m an EMT here to help you. We’ll be
transporting you to the hospital soon. Rolling you to your side now…”
Three days later…
“Miss Morris, so glad I caught you,” a frowning Detective Ford says
from the doorway. “I thought you weren’t leaving the hospital until
tomorrow.”
Shit. Shit. Shit. My stomach drops. I told him that so I could get out of
this suffocating room without more questions. Mostly because I don’t have
any answers. Especially to the big one—do I know who tried to murder me.
After I choked up half the ocean, I woke up in the hospital. I was in and
out mentally and physically for a while but after two days I’m ready to go
home. If I’m lucky I’ll be out of here before my nagging older brother
shows up.
My bestie, Sadie, who was supposed to spring me, waves sheepishly
from behind the detective.
I force a smile. “I’m just making so much progress, they decided to let
me go.”
He doesn’t let me finish. “I’d like to follow you to your home. Make
sure everything is safe. Maybe being in familiar surroundings might help
you remember something.”
“Detective, I’d—”
“I just want to make sure you get home safely. Then I’ll leave and you
can contact me when you remember something. I won’t demand any
answers today.”
“Let him,” Sadie pleads from her spot just behind the hulking detective.
“Please, for me.”
