Abbie
MARCUS ENTERED THE PORTAL. This is the all-caps subject line for
three dozen new emails that weren’t in my inbox when I left the house
thirty minutes ago. People outside my line of work might think about interdimensional travel, but I know it’s just another day in college sports. Our
top player decided he wanted to leverage the team’s conference
championship win and NCAA tournament appearance this season to get
himself on a bigger Division 1 basketball team. I can’t blame him for
wanting to be on a team whose games are regularly shown on national
television and can give him more NIL money. That’s how it is these days.
The news doesn’t surprise me, but my boss is obviously freaking out.
Will Brentley, the Athletic Director here at UNC Asheville, hasn’t been
my biggest fan for the two seasons I’ve been with the program. If he knew
Marcus Cobb had talked to me about his decision and that I’d encouraged
him to do what he thought was best for himself, he’d probably blow a
gasket. Maybe even work harder to get rid of me. Not that he has any valid
reasons to do so.
I’ve had the feeling since the first time we met that he’s
not a fan of a woman being the men’s basketball team athletic trainer. Or
maybe I’m reading more into his icy demeanor than is actually there. He
could just be someone who doesn’t like to mix work and friendship, but I
think it’s more than that.
Reading through the emails in the order he sent them, I realize they’re
all knee-jerk reactions to the announcement. The rest of our team is staying
and we have some incoming freshman who will be assets. Losing one
player, even if he is our top scorer, will not devastate the team. We have a
brilliant coach who excels at honing players’strengths and gelling the team.
The most recent email requests my presence in his office as soon as
possible. I sigh, thinking about my agenda for the day. I have several
appointments to schedule for players, a stack of notes to input into my
computer from yesterday, and I need to prepare for the players who will be
in to see me after lunch for treatment. Thankfully, we’re in the brief lull
between the end of the season and summer training, so my to-do list isn’t
longer.
I reply to the last email saying I’ll be up to his office in ten minutes.
My phone rings immediately.
“Abbie Price,” I say, already knowing who’s on the other line.
“Abigail,” Will says, “I said ASAP. What’s so important that you need
ten minutes?”
I roll my eyes. No matter how many times I’ve asked him to call me
Abbie, he still insists on using my given name. Not even my parents call me
Abigail. “I’ll be right up.”
He hangs up without another word and I set down the receiver.
