Beginnings
– Valorie –
Two and a Half Months Later
Some day, one of my idiotic decisions is going to get me killed , I think to
myself as I trip over a loose stone hidden in the gloom of one of the
dimly lit pathways through campus. Someone—an engineer, or focus group
member, or one of my parents—should have told the dean they needed
more lamp posts along these smaller side routes when they did the latest
landscaping redesign. I can barely see my hand in front of me. But then
again, how would they have known? Who else is dumb enough to be
walking around here at five in the morning?

When I offered to help my mom move her equipment before my first
class, I didn’t think she would want me up before sunrise. I figured I would
run over to the Biological and Biomedical Sciences building after breakfast,
grab a couple boxes for her, and walk her to her new office and faculty lab
on the other side of the building. But apparently, that’s not what she
envisioned happening. Now I’m up before dawn, tripping over my feet in
the almost-dark. I hope she at least bought a box of doughnuts from the
twenty-four hour shop down the street she knows I love.

I rub my gritty eyes and shove my hands back into my jacket pockets,
looking around at the tree-lined cobblestones and manicured green spaces
of Sycamore University. In the lush darkness, lit by the light of the
occasional antique street-lamp peeking through the trees, the campus looks
like something out of a fairy tale. The soft lighting sparkles off the steel and
glass that make up the buildings of the Science Quarter. This section of the
campus is the newest one, and it looks radically different from the mixture
of historic marble and brick buildings found in the other areas of the school.

The older buildings are beautiful and majestic, but I have to admit the sleek,
modern style of these new behemoths is amazing to behold.
Especially when you’re running on about four hours of broken sleep.
As I approach the front of my mother’s laboratory building, I slow to a
stop, flop onto one of the wrought-iron benches surrounded by flowers that
flank the entrance, and release an exhausted huff. The gathered dew soaks
into the blue cotton of my skater dress, the cold droplets cutting straight
through to my skin like icicles. The dress will dry, but I can’t muster the
energy to open my eyes and walk the last few steps to the door without a
little break.

David kept me up until midnight last night sending memes to our group
chat from some Netflix dating show he’s always trying to get me to watch.
He only stopped when I threatened to wake his boyfriend and the third
member of our “Best Friends Forever” group chat, Charlie. Char is almost
as much of a bear when he’s woken up early as I am. Bringing him into the
equation finally made David shut up so I could attempt to fight my brain
and get a few hours of sleep before having to wake up at this ungodly hour
to be a good daughter.
