Dear Dad
Mom said it would be okay to write you a letter. I asked her when I’d see
you again and she said she wasn’t sure. I said I wanted to phone you but she
said you’re not taking calls at the moment. She said you might not answer
the letter, either, but that I could try.
The address is to ‘Bridge Gate’ but I don’t know what that is. It sounds like
some kind of B&B. Are you staying at a B&B?
The problem with a letter is that I don’t really know what to write. If we
could talk then I think I would know what to say but a letter is different. It’s
like talking to an empty room.
Mom said to tell you about school. School is fine. I like English but I hate
geography. In English we are reading some Shakespeare and it’s difficult to
understand but I like it anyway, especially Macbeth. Next year we will
study Romeo & Juliet which I am looking forward to.
Me and Sarah-Jayne (she is my best friend) cut off all our hair the other
day! Mom was cross but I think it’s my hair and I can do what I want with
it? I’m 11 now so it’s not like I’m a little kid anymore. Anyway it didn’t
look THAT nice so S-J’s mom took us to her hairdresser to tidy it up and it
looks better now. Mom was happy. S-J’s mom says I am a bad influence on
S-J but Mom says it’s the other way around. That’s mother’s for you! The
hairdresser said I look more cheeky elvin now than keemo chic but I don’t
know what that means. I don’t know what elvin or keemo is.
I’m going to stop writing and post this letter now. I hope you get it. I hope
you reply. It’s weird knowing that you have a dad out there somewhere but
you don’t get to see him. It’s a little bit like you died.

I have included the letter that you sent me in this envelope. You will see I
have made corrections where your spelling or grammar was incorrect. I
hope you will study it thoroughly. Specifically I would like to point out
your usage of “me and Sarah-Jayne” where it should have been “SarahJayne and I”. Also remember that contractions are signalled with
apostrophes but plurals are not. Instead of writing “That’s mother’s for you”
with an apostrophe, it should have been “mothers” (plural), without the
apostrophe. Also, you use too many exclamation marks. Like insults,
exclamation marks shouldn’t be employed unless they are absolutely
necessary.
By “elvin” I assume you meant “elfin” which means like an elf.
By “keemo” I assume you meant “chemo” as in “chemotherapy” which is a
cancer treatment that can make your hair fall out (and is not to be made
light of, especially by a hairdresser).
