Pouring herself a “celebratory” glass of wine, Kate couldn’t help her rather
melancholy mood. She’d been determined not to feel sorry for herself, but
that had lasted no time at all. She wished Charlie were with her. Not knowing
when she’d be finished at the solicitors, she’d welcomed her mum’s offer to
pick her son up from school and have him stay the night. But right this
minute, missing his ceaseless chatter and love, the house felt terribly empty,
and made the fact she’d just got divorced, and her little family was officially
broken apart, even more poignant.
Although only six o’clock, she was hungry and ready for supper. She’d
taken to dining early with Charlie since she and Nick had split up; it was no
fun cooking just for herself anyway, and she didn’t like Charlie eating alone.
By now she’d thought he’d have at least one sibling, if not two, but her
marriage had hit the rocks soon after Charlie was born. She and Nick had
struggled on for the next couple of years, but neither of them had mentioned
trying for another child, knowing without having to say the words that their
relationship wasn’t strong enough to handle it.
Nick had moved out almost two years ago, when they’d both finally had
to accept the inevitable. The main thing she’d felt was relief: relief that she
no longer had to pretend. Their last years together had been exhausting: the
constant bickering arguments had been upsetting, but at least showed some
passion lingered; when that withered and died, their rote, coolly polite
exchanges masked the indifference of strangers — automatons playing at
love, their occasional attempts at affection ringing hollow and false, no
matter how genuine the effort. The charade of a relationship, performed to
each other, to Charlie and to the world.
Ironically, it was after he’d left that Nick really showed what a good
father he could be. He was much more reliable, and far more patient and
involved with Charlie, than he’d been when they were a couple. She’d hated
to admit it at the time, but they were both happier apart. They respected each
other and had even managed to salvage a friendship of sorts for Charlie’s
sake out of the wreckage of their marriage.
There was no chance of them getting back together, and Kate wouldn’t
have wanted them to. But today their divorce seemed so absolute. The last
nail in the coffin of what they’d had, and the family they’d created.
And so, despite knowing it was for the best and merely the final step of
what had been foregone for a long time, for now at least, she was sad.
The telephone’s ring broke her gloomy reminiscences and Kate answered
it gratefully, “Hello?”
“Hiya lovely, it’s me,” replied her best friend, Rebecca. Becca was
Kate’s opposite in looks: tall and curvy with short blond hair and blue eyes,
where Kate was brunette, small and slight. Kate didn’t see it, but she was
very pretty: her delicate features, hazel eyes and thick, tousled, curling locks
made an arresting picture.
Kate could hear Becca’s two young sons and husband horsing about in
the background and it made her heart ache: listening to a happy family going
about their evening together was really something she could do without. She
focused on her friend’s voice.
