Oberon
Avalon, over fivethousand years ago…
Oberon Ó Duibh’s life was damned near perfect. Standing on a marble
dais above the most powerful fae in the world, he watched as fear
flickered across their faces.
The platform beneath his feet held swirling veins of gold and silver, its
surface embedded with precious gems, each stone picked to represent the
colors of the three royal fae bloodlines: black, green, and white. A
cavernous hall stretched out before him, the high ceiling held aloft by
soaring columns of cloud-white marble.
The hall boasted a large assembly of fae, split down the middle by a long,
embroidered purple carpet, which led from the enormous double doors to
the steps of the dais. It was where the new High King and High Queen
would walk once their coronation was complete. It was also where they
would greet their subjects, and where the Lower Court kings and queens
would swear their fealty to their new rulers.
Malice, awe, and envy were almost scents in the air as the coveted High
King’s crown was held above Oberon’s head by a chanting official dressed
in the yellow of a High Court noble. Oberon could feel the weight of the
audience’s stares, from the fierce gazes of the fire fae to the icy glares of the
death dealers. Gowns and skin tones varied from purple to black, white,
pink, green, red, and even gray—although some of the fae didn’t even have
skin. And there were crowns aplenty in sight.
But all Oberon could think about was how he’d seemingly gotten
everything he’d ever wanted, and more. He’d taken on the world and won.
He’d not only acquired the throne, but also a mate and power.
So. Much. Power.
His entire life had been about this moment, about becoming High King of
Avalon. But even he could have never imagined it happening like this. With
the world at his feet, and a worthy mate by his side.
A series of sharp stings bit into his head when the base of the strangely
feather-light crown settled on his white hair, as if a dozen previously hidden
spikes had burst forth to drill into his skull. He smiled as pain seared
through his veins, welcoming the agony, as it symbolized the start of his
trial by magic—the last and only step before he became High King.
Oberon’s heartbeat turned sluggish while the crown’s magic—or poison
—began to work its dark enchantment. The oxygen in his lungs vanished,
the metal on his head heating to near-intolerable temperatures, the bitter
stench of burnt hair thickly coating the air. Light was stripped from his field
of vision and the surrounding soundscape dimmed to nothing. He was
vulnerable now, more vulnerable than he’d been in his entire life, aside
from as a mere babe.
Without thinking, he drew on the magic from the world beneath his feet,
forcing air to surround him, replacing the vacuum in his lungs and the one
cocooning his body.
