the Puget Sound off the shores of Seattle sits Saoirse Island. It is an island visited each year by eager tourists. While the winter is a quiet time on the island, the spring begins to bring the occasional tourists on the ferry. It is during the fall harvest, however, that the crowds make their way to the island. The island’s small population relies upon this tourism. The quaint shops that line Main Street are a tourist’s delight. Without the Salt Orchards, however, the island wouldn’t be able to survive. Whoever controlled the orchards thus had great power over the island and its residents, many of which made their living at the orchards.
The orchards had originally belonged to the Morgan family, but by marriage, fell to the Salts. When Henry Salt died over eight years ago, he finally ended the power imbalance on the island by leaving the orchards to the town. His son, Calvin, had left the island over two decades earlier, and his grandson, August, had likewise left over five years before the time of Henry’s death. There was nobody left in the Salt family to run it, but it had worked out well for the island in the end.
This island is surrounded by rumors of witchcraft, which is another reason curious tourists like to frequent the island. But the islanders don’t like outsiders – they just tolerate them to make a living. They are private people, and they take care of their own. There are families that go back for generations. The Blackwoods, Morgans, and Salts are amongst those families. Each family passes down homes and jobs to the next generation. They also pass on their spell books.
