FIRST BUILT IN 1955, Whoopeetown eventually became the largest
amusement park in Greater Los Angeles. Named after the legendary
animator and movie producer Elias Whoopee, the theme park featured
many of his iconic cartoon characters and stories, all within a massive
eighty hectare compound.
With over a hundred thousand visitors a day flocking past the entrance
gates, it was pretty easy to get lost in the crowds, and Dax Bidet planned to
do just that.
After depositing his best friend’s sedan in the parking garage
overlooking the park, he opened the car door and kept out of sight from the
other passersby for a few minutes before reappearing again, this time
pushing a large, covered baby stroller.
“Ugh, this is damned heavy,” Dax murmured aloud while heading
towards the elevators.
“Just shut up and smile,” a husky, high-pitched voice coming from the
stroller replied.
Stopping in front of the lift doors, Dax waited patiently, hoping no one
else would be using the elevator at this particular moment. A minute later,
the door opened and he was thankful there was no one inside as he pushed
the stroller into the lift.
“Hold, please!” a squeaky feminine voice called out, before a veiny
hand with red-painted nails slammed against the edges of the doors just as
they were about to close.
Dax gulped as a large rotund man with short silvery hair and beard
wearing a loud Hawaiian shirt lumbered into the elevator, accompanied by
an older woman in skirts, tennis shoes and a gardening hat. He was hemmed
in, and it was too late to leave as the doors slammed shut.
The man smiled as Dax pushed the button for the ground floor. “Our
first time going to Whoopeetown,” he said. “We’ve been looking forward to
this for years. We’re from Arkansas, by the way.”
Dax returned the man’s smile out of sheer courtesy. He hated these
talkative yokel types, and hoped they’d have a bad day. “I’m sure they’ll be
very glad to have you.”
The grinning woman held up a pink handbag as she gyrated back and
forth in barely suppressed excitement before her eyes fell upon the stroller
beside her. “Oh, how old is your baby?”
“He’s… between two and three,” Dax said. “Mentally, anyway.”
“My, my,” the woman said. “He must be a very big boy for a double
stroller like that.”
Don’t look at the baby, don’t look at the baby, Dax thought as the
woman loomed over the large stroller while making cuddly noises. “Peek-aboo. Who’s in there?” she asked playfully.
The woman reached in and was about to lift back the carriage’s hood
when a low, threatening growl erupted from the covered blanket
underneath. She let out a panicked yelp and drew back in fright, just as the
elevator doors finally opened up.
