WANDERER

Around three years later
Ozzy

An adventurer.
A voyager.
An explorer.
It’s who I am. What I’ve become. Hell, who am I kidding? Traveling is my
lifeline—the only way I stay sane.
There’s also the fact I’m a killer.
I’ve compartmentalized that part of my life into a secure place in the dark
alcoves of my soul. It funds my globe-trotting and gives me life, even if it is
a living hell.

At least these are the lies I tell myself.
I prefer adventurer and explorer to drifter or vagabond, which is what I’ve
really become. I might have a home base in Virginia, but it’s no home.
Perfecting the art of living and working out of a backpack might as well be
at the top of my résumé.

If I had one.
Which I don’t.
I’m living and breathing, which means I’m damn good at my job. I don’t
need a résumé to tout my skills. The moment I’m not good at my job will be
the day I’m D-E-A-D in every sense of the word.
“Gracias.” I take the ticket and make my way through the station in a quick
jog, as final boarding for my train is announced in three different languages.
I’ve spent the day traveling from Crew’s European base in Paris. I’m
cutting my connections close, but they sent me a last-minute job. I need to
be in Libya by tomorrow night, which is going to be a feat in and of itself
unless Asa can get my ass booked on a charter.

Private jets flown by pilots we trust in this part of the world aren’t a dime a
dozen—especially at a moment’s notice.
Crew has my back, I know this. Hell, he treats everyone from camp as if we
share his DNA. I trust him, but that doesn’t mean I like last-minute jobs.
I’m methodical and measured. I trust numbers and microchips more than I
do people.

People—generally speaking—suck.
Give me a computer and a satellite, and I’m a content man. I don’t need
anyone or anything else.

I barely make it and am one of the last bodies to hop on the train. I move
through the cars to my sleeper cabin. I have no desire to be close to anyone,
and who knows what the next week will look like. Preparing for this job is
the first priority, and some sleep would be nice too.

We start to roll, but I stop in the narrow hall. A woman with a head of hair
fanned over a backpack that looks like it could explode at any moment is
blocking the way. She’s arguing with an attendant in English, her words
hitting him rapid-fire. The poor guy can barely keep up.

“My husband ran to the dining car to pick up dinner so we can eat privately
and retire early. I’m newly pregnant and not sure if I’m starving or ill. But
he took off with my key. If you would kindly open the door, I need to use
the restroom and freshen up. We’ve been traveling for two days straight.”
