The morning sun blazed into my room, sending the shadows and swells
of the morning darkness back into hiding. I lay completely still, basking in
the comfort of bed and the strange longing which always followed waking
up.
Stretching languidly, I stared around the small but familiar space. It was
mine for now, until I left for college again in a few months. I loved being
home. I loved the way it smelled, I loved the way that my mother insisted
that each and every trophy, prize, and drawing I’d ever done be hanging
somewhere around the two-bedroom apartment we’d spent the last few
years in.
It was home.
I rolled over, grinning as I noticed the single white rose bud laying on
the pillow beside my face. Picking it up, I touched the delicate petals that

I laughed, letting my hip bump against the countertop as I went back
through my night. I didn’t dream often, a fact my mother always considered
fascinating, but last night there was something there, lingering just out of
reach. Probably brought on by the confetti cake coma that I had spent most
of the evening in. Slowly the images took shape, a familiar form in my
mind, ever present, ever familiar.
Him.
The shadowed form of a male, my protector and constant companion.
Sipping the sweet citrus drink down, I considered my mother’s face. I
had to be careful with this subject. It…. was sensitive. “Do you remember
when I had that invisible friend all those years ago?”
Mom’s knuckles were white as she gripped the table. Disappointed by
her reaction, but unwilling to stop my thoughts, I pushed onward. “I
dreamed about him last night. We were sitting together at a table like this.
He had this armor on, covered in dirt and looking like he was fresh from
war. But as soon as I tried to focus on what we were saying, he lifted a hand
and began to take his helmet off–”
