A walk among the tombstones gives a girl perspective,
especially when the tombstones in question tell the tale of the
neighborhood you grew up in, the grammar school you
attended, and the parish church where you were married. Here
lies the first little girl who spoke to me on the playground
when I was the new kid in school. She was dropped to the
pavement by an aneurysm the day before her twenty-ninth
birthday.
To my left, the class clown, a bright-eyed boy dead at
thirty-seven from a cancer both stunning and horrifying in its
lethal efficiency. Just ahead was the ornate headstone of a girl
whose fancy house and designer clothes I’d envied all through
high school. She’d spent the fifteen years after we graduated
drinking herself to death, finally finishing the job a week after
our class reunion. Safe to say, none of us had ended up where
we’d thought we would.
I moved on. There’d been a funeral that afternoon—no
one I knew: I’d checked the online parish bulletin—and I
made my way around the freshly dug earth and blanket of
flowers. There were a couple of nice arrangements of early
spring blooms mixed in with the usual funereal floral
offerings. I wrinkled my nose. I hated the smell of lilies. I left
the cloying odor behind as I moved into the older part of the
cemetery. In use before the parish got larger and wealthier, it
was close to the church and the rectory.
