How was Seb supposed to live on $2013.56 for a whole, freaking thirtyone-day month before he got paid? Even in Glitter Lake—which had
sounded like an awesome place to catch his breath and reinvent himself—
but had turned out to have nothing to spend his money on but tchotchkes.
Not that he had anything against tchotchkes. The right pieces displayed the

He glared down at the miserable little Maltipoo. Proudly gay and

whimsical purchase of Seb’s deadbeat, no-good, cheater of an ex.
The light turned green, and he stepped off the curb and… Oh my God!
Were the curbs three times the height of every other curb he’d stepped off in
his life because… because there was no street under his foot, nothing solid,
nothing to hold him up—like his whole freaking life!—and he was
swinging his arms and tumbling into the air—“Yap, yap, yap!”—feeling his
foot twist under him as he went flying halfway across the street in a
skittering roll.
“Yap, yap, yap!”
Elton bounded up and down, racing around him in enthusiastic circles.
Was there some way Seb could pretend he’d meant to do this? Practicing
his acrobatic act for the clumsiest circus on freaking Earth? He flopped onto
his back and got his palms underneath him. Was he in one piece? Well…
except for his ankle, which he wasn’t sure wasn’t irreparably shattered. He
blinked at two cars and a pickup stopped in the intersection and the entire
population of Glitter Lake rushing toward him. An older woman, who
needed serious help in the color-matching department judging from her
choice of fuchsia lipstick to go with her choice of lime green and aqua
floral blouse—and yes, Seb judged—reached him first.
“My word! What a fall you took, young man. Are you all right? Can
you get up?”
She patted his bent leg, perilously close to his ankle. “I’m fine!”
She blinked. “Well, if you ask me, you sound a little stressed.”
A crowd of people gathered round.
“Yap, yap, yap…”
