Avery Cunningham eventually arrived at the Bumblebee Bed and Breakfast
after three days of excruciatingly long travel. Her meticulously mapped out
journey to the small town of Hero had been squashed by a sudden surprise
—her jobless younger brother volunteering to help drive her there. She
hadn’t mustered up the courage to tell him no, even though she obviously
knew he’d set fire to all his remaining connections in New York City. Why
he thought a road trip from New York to Texas would be a good escape plan
was still beyond her, but Avery couldn’t find it in her heart to turn down his
offer.
Neal had given his word, his solemn promise that he would secure
employment straightaway upon their arrival—all while sporting the most
pitiful face Avery had ever seen. She couldn’t help but melt like butter
beneath those puppy-dog eyes. Trying to remain realistic, Avery steeled
herself against the tugging of her heartstrings as she sped along in the rental
car beside her brother. After all, Neal had a well-earned reputation for not
following through with anything.
“This is the place you gave up your Michelin star career for?” her
brother asked with an incredulous tone as he climbed out of the driver’s seat
and pushed his glasses up the ridge of his nose as he squinted his green eyes
with disgust.
She followed behind, already regretting her choice to let him tag along.
“Remember, Jenesa is letting you stay here out of the goodness of her heart.
I expect you to help out around here until you get back on your feet.”
“Okay, Mom,” Neal stated sarcastically as he ran his fingers through his
auburn hair.
“Not funny,” Avery quipped sarcastically with a mocking frown and an
exaggerated eyebrow raise. “I’m nothing like her.” At least, she desperately
wanted to believe that she wasn’t like the overbearing woman that they had
both sprinted away from as soon as they were eighteen. It was a comparison
she would have walked through fire to avoid.
The siblings stood in front of the quaint B&B, staring up at the threestory building, constructed in the style of a Victorian mansion, with soft
yellow paint and ornate black trim, fittingly called the Bumblebee. The
garden surrounding the building was lush and inviting, the trees providing a
dappled canopy of shade to the delicate bushes and wildflowers that lay
beneath. It was both beautiful and imposing—but not as imposing as the
mountain of suitcases and cookware Avery had managed to stuff in the back
of the rental car.
Sighing, she made her way to the back of the vehicle and pressed the
button to open up the trunk. She waited for her brother to offer to help with
her hand on her hips, but he didn’t seem to get her message. “Are you going
to help me with all of this or what?” she questioned with a snap of her
fingers.
