A melie swiped sweat out of her eyes with the back of one hand,
counting under her breath as she struggled to keep her steps in
rhythm with her inhales and exhales. Her toe caught the crack on the
uneven sidewalk, and she cursed as she stumbled forward.
Whoever said there was a runner’s high never stepped foot in New
Orleans. Or here in Treater’s Way, where everything was built on a swamp,
and the foundations were marsh.
Still, Amelie recovered enough to continue her jog, allowing one small
whoop of victory when her watch indicated she had half a mile to go. With
each step her mind wandered, landing on the cottage.
She was dreaming about it. Again.
Usually, her runs were more pleasant. A way to jog loose stuck
thoughts. Like her current project, and the sea she couldn’t quite capture in
detail.
It was the color that plagued her, she decided. That shade of blue wasn’t
right. Maybe blended with a stronger jade…
Her watch dinged, so she slowed her steps as she approached Illusion
Square, the shopping center that housed her art gallery. At the heart of the
cobblestone-paved courtyard was the Mighty Oak, a massive tree with
branches expanding up and over the four shops that took residence. She
braced one hand against its trunk, grabbing her ankle with the other and
completing a series of stretches to round out her workout.
Green might not be enough. White, perhaps, or a hint of gray to soften
the hue…
She unlocked Explore Art, her little corner of heaven, and smiled to
herself. This time of day, the sun reflected off the windows at the entrance
and cast a glow on the tile floors and glossy black shelves. It gave the store
a sheen, as if it glimmered with the excitement of a creative day. “I know
the feeling.”
She ran a finger along the checkout counter, with its butcher block
countertop that added warmth to the simple, efficient displays. The store
was divided into three sections. The front was a blend of gallery-style
canvases and art supplies for sale. The brushes, paints, easels and canvases
—as well as sketch pads and a variety of charcoal and wax pencils—was a
rainbow of organization, designed to give budding new artists a soothing
and welcoming introduction to the world of art.
The middle, set up classroom style with a circle of easels, supported the
weekly painting and sketching classes Amelie offered. The third section,
tucked near the back of the store behind a chenille gold curtain was
reserved for exclusive customers. Amelie rolled her shoulders, then headed
in that direction.
Her project would have to wait. The cottage wasn’t going to.
She halted when her phone chirped, then grit her teeth at the number on
the display before plastering a fake smile that lit her voice. “Hello, Mrs.
Davis. I was just about to add finishing touches to our project. The water
color isn’t quite right yet, and while that doesn’t seem important—”
“You can hold off, Amelie,” the chipper but pretentious voice on the
other end began, “Andrew is reconsidering changing the location to
Venice.”
