“Hi, Sheriff Song!”
The pack of girls waved and giggled as they passed by on
their way into the school gymnasium, elegant and dressed to
the nines in their formal dresses and wraps. To Spenser, they
looked like little girls playing dress up. Though to be fair, she
always thought the same of herself back when she attended
school dances.
“Have a good time tonight, girls,” Spenser said. “And make
good choices.”
That touched off a round of laughter and whispered
murmurs among the group. Spenser watched as they passed
beneath the balloon arch and disappeared into the gym. The
windows pulsed with colored lights and the air around her
vibrated with the thump of music, laughter, and the excited
voices of the kids attending Taft High’s Spring Formal.
“Robby Browning,” Amanda said.

“You really know how to suck the joy out of things, don’t
you?”
“It’s one of my gifts.”
Amanda scoffed. “It was old-timey elegance,” she replied
with a wistful tone in her voice. “What about you? Who took
you to your senior Spring Formal?”
“Nobody,” Spenser said. “I didn’t go.”
“Why not?”
She shrugged, a sly smile on her lips. “Back then, I thought
I was too cool for school dances. Me and some of my
girlfriends held an anti-Spring Formal.”
“An anti-Spring Formal?”
