Roxie stared at her mom, trying to wrap her head around what Willie
had just told her. “Your late ex-husband left you seven and a half
million dollars. You’re sure?”
“No, of course not,” Willie answered. “That’s why I told the attorney I’ll
believe it when I see it in my account. But what if it is true? Why would his
lawyer lie to me?”

Roxie thought about her mom’s fourth husband, who’d also been her last.
Zippy had been a working magician with his own stage show and seemed to
be in good shape financially, from what she could tell during the brief visit
she’d made to Las Vegas to meet him. But she wouldn’t have pegged him as
having that kind of dough laying around. “Was Zippy really worth that
much? I knew he was well off, but…”

“You saw his house in Vegas. You stayed there. It was pretty big and
very fancy. That whole pool setup wasn’t cheap.”
“Sure, but a big house with its own lazy river on a nice property doesn’t
mean there’s money in the bank. Sometimes people live above their means.
Especially showbiz people.”

“That’s true, but the lawyer told me Zippy owned the rights to a bunch of
magic tricks, tricks he invented. Once he found out he had cancer, he put
them up for auction to the highest bidder.”
“Magic tricks raise that kind of money?” Roxie shot her mom a skeptical
look.

Willie nodded. “Apparently, they do. At least the ones as good as what
Zippy came up with. And he’s been creating tricks and selling them to other
magicians for years. But in his last days, he finally let go of the ones he’d
kept for himself. The big ones. And they were worth the most.”
“Well, good for him.” Roxie couldn’t imagine her mother was really
going to come into that kind of money. “Good for you, too, if it actually
happens.”
Willie gazed off into the distance. “I can’t believe he left all of that to
me.”

“Didn’t he have kids?”
Willie nodded. “He had a son from his first marriage. He must be forty or
fifty by now. Decent guy. I think he was a general contractor in Reno.
Anyway, the lawyer told me that he’d been taken care of, too. And Zippy left
money to the International Brotherhood of Magicians to help take care of
those who needed it.”

“What a nice guy.”
“He really was.” Willie put her hand to her mouth for a moment, just
sitting there, staring off into space. For a second, Roxie wondered if Willie
was going to start crying. Then she looked at Roxie. “If this is real, if the
money actually does show up, I know exactly what I’m going to do with it.”
Her brows rose and she nodded. “I’m setting Trina up in her own shop.”
“Oh, Ma.” Roxie inhaled. “That would be…” She almost couldn’t speak
because of the surge of emotion rushing through her. “It would be everything.
That would change her life.”
