Present Day
My bathroom gets perfect southern exposure, which means I have to eject a
man from the windowsill every time I shower.
“We’ve discussed this close to, possibly more than, one hundred times,
Bee. I’m not letting you stay here.”
To help with my scolding, I prop my fists on my hips and attempt my best
glare at the black cat refusing to vacate the bathroom. He merely blinks at
me, the slow gesture full of insolence.
But what did I expect? I’m no good at glaring. Never have been and was
never willing to put in the effort required to learn.
“I’d like to think that I’m an open-minded witch,” I tell him with a sigh.
“But I refuse to shower in front of you when you’re likely a human man.”
Bee yawns in response, then finds a way to sprawl in even more of a furry
puddle in the warmth of the afternoon sun spilling through the stained glass
window. Every bathroom in this old Victorian house has a stained glass
window, which I find odd but endearing. Each has a different bird scene; this
one sports a blue heron.
We see plenty of the birds standing on their stilt-like legs on the banks of
Lake Galen, the great watery expanse that this house sits next to. Sometimes,
I catch sight of a heron in a beautiful, smooth glide over the calm water.
Then, the bird lets out a noise like a prehistoric monster and ruins the
calm of their presence.
Just like I’m about to ruin Bee’s relaxing afternoon nap.
But I need a shower. I’ve been reorganizing old books all day, and I’m
wearing a second layer over my overalls that’s fashioned from condensed
dust.
Is there such an ailment as a gray lung? If so, I have it.
“Fair warning: I’m about to touch you. You know I don’t like
manhandling you like this, but you’ve left me no choice.”
That’s not exactly true. I could go ask my sister to use her bathroom. But
she loves strongly scented body wash and hair products that always make me
sneeze, even when I’m not using them. Like the floral scents have melded
with the tiles in her shower.
I want to use my bathroom now that I finally have my own.
Morgana and I spent years in close quarters, traveling around the country
in an RV, stopping at every used bookstore we came across to search for
discarded grimoires and texts that discussed mythical creatures. My older
sister had a dream of establishing a library to house the books, where our
kind could access the information and develop a greater understanding of
ourselves.
