Awakening after a Long Sleep
Sunlight, or something resembling sunlight, filtered through a hole in
the wall of the decrepit fortress. The enchantments warding against
overgrowth had long since faded, and vines grasped within. A statue
stood half-turned before the hole, its wings shattered by an old impact, and
a bird nest squatted on its head like a mock crown, a little thrush chirping
happily within.

Crack!
The bird shot from its perch, expressing its indignation with loud
squawks. A long line meandered from the top of the statue’s head to its
chest, other imperfections webbing out. Though nothing else happened for a
time, the bird maintained its distanced protests, its animal instincts keeping
it back.

Then the statue exploded. Shards of stone ricocheted off the walls and
floor, one clipping the bird and knocking it to the ground. In the statue’s
place stood a panting humanoid, his silver eyes dulled, chunks of stone
clinging to his bronze skin and golden hair.
“Ah. My apologies, little one,” Enoch said. He knelt next to the downed
bird and held out his hand.

“[Lesser Heal]”
The thrush flew off with nary a thank you chirp.
Enoch stumbled to his feet, wincing at the light. The world around
wavered and blurred as his vision slowly recovered. Feeling his way along
the wall, he came to the hole and waited. A breeze caressed his face, a cool
contrast to the warmth of the outside light. Finally, the details solidified,
and Enoch couldn’t help but stare.

The plain surrounding Starmeer had transformed into a green, hilly area
with the occasional tree. Considering the destructive power of the lightning
and the amount of time that had passed, the restructuring of the land did not
surprise him.

What left him speechless was that the Citadel and the land immediately
surrounding it now floated as an island in the sky. Where there should have
been ground, a silvery expanse stretched towards the horizon like the waters
of the sea. Distant dots, probably other airborne landmasses, littered the sky
in every direction, even above and below, like makeshift stars.

The most striking thing, however, was the sun. It rested at an almost
horizontal plane from him. That celestial body, it would seem, had fallen
from beyond and now lay within reach, as though it could be sailed to.
But its light was indeed distant. Much of the land around Starmeer
lurked in shadows which stretched away from the sun, as if the world
neared night even though the sky shone bright as noon.

One oddly shaped shadow caught his eye. It sprang from an almost
entirely overgrown object that stood on a hilltop. At last, recognition
dawned, and his heart fell.
It was Judgment, its hilt pointing skyward. His master would never have
let it go.

“Thank you, Master,” Enoch whispered, and wept.
After a brief time of mourning, he wiped away the tears. Apex had
given them a chance to live. As steward of Starmeer in his master’s
absence, it fell to him to check on the others.
