RELIC KNEW HE WOULD find her here. If she wasn’t sleeping or
hunting, she was here, keeping silent watch over the House. She was
a little thing, his hunting partner, not quite five foot when standing. She
looked even smaller perched on the rooftop of the highest tower of the
castle they called home. Her knees were pulled up under her chin, cool
evening breeze stirring her long white hair. In almost every way, he and
Dark were opposites. He was tall, bronze-skinned, with golden eyes and
unruly black hair. They had been friends for almost a thousand years
regardless of their considerable differences.

“I would guess that you are the reason there was a fire in the city
tonight?” Dark’s voice was very soft, a little deeper than her slight frame
would suggest.
Relic couldn’t hide his roguish grin. “Yup.”
“Care to elaborate?” She raised a white brow, turning her delicate face
towards him. Her dark, amethyst eyes and still face gave little away, but

there was a seriousness in the set of her lips, and a touch of amused

Saying the name tightened his throat with some weird combination of fury
and grief.

“That’s putting it lightly. I pray for the day I receive word from the
Vatican that he’s on my list. He is too careful and too smart though. I doubt
they make much note of him. They don’t care what supernaturals do to one
another. Only what they do to humans.” The vampire stared out over the
sprawling castle grounds. Relic could tell there was more on her mind than
his relationship issues, but Dark most often kept her own council.
For a while, they simply sat in companionable silence, each left to their
own thoughts.

Castle Obsidian was a huge, gothic affair, more cathedral than castle,
though Relic got the impression that it could take whatever particular form
suited its master. In this case, that person was Dark. A gift to her from
Death himself, who had courted her to be his scion for nearly half a century
before she agreed. After the original Night Household had burned on a
snowy Christmas Eve in 1939, the few survivors had scattered without
leadership. Decades later, Dark had come forward determined to revive the
House and their mission once more. It had not been to a rebuilt Castle Night
