“JARED, WE NEED TO TALK,” JANELLE SAID, HER LIPS PINCHING
together as she crossed her arms in front of her chest.
I groaned and reluctantly pushed myself up, shifting to the edge of the
bed. My eyelids drooped, struggling to remain open and focused as they
fixated on my hovering girlfriend. Clutching the mattress, I braced myself
for the argument ahead.

I wished she could have the decency to wait until I had my first cup of
coffee.
“What is it now, Janelle?”
“You’re seriously taking that tone with me after how you treated me
yesterday?” She glared at me and paced the worn wood floor in front of my
bed.

My mind replayed the events of last night and the show my band had
played. The bar itself wasn’t anything to write home about. Still, sixty or so
lively people showed up and sang along to almost every cover we played.
Afterward, we were all high on adrenaline and decided to stay out and
celebrate. Janelle had wanted me to go home earlier in the night with her,
but I had brushed her off.

“I didn’t do anything last night.”
“Are you kidding me? You were flirting with every single girl that came
up to you after the show.” She stopped pacing and clenched her fists. This
was not good for me. “Then, when I practically begged you to take me
home, you insisted on staying out late. Again.”
I ran my fingers through my tousled hair. “Janelle, for the millionth
time, I was just talking to them. Nothing would ever happen. I’m with you.”
“It’s like this every time you have a show,” she said, ignoring my
comment. “It’s like you can’t get enough of the spotlight. I know you love it
that girls are all over you.”

“That isn’t true.”
Well, it wasn’t entirely not true, but I couldn’t tell her that and fuel the
flame of this argument. How could I not love the attention of beautiful
women—or anyone, really—telling me they think I’m talented?
But that was beside the point. I would never trash our relationship like
that, even with our ups and downs. Loyalty ran deep within me, and it
baffled me that Janelle seemed oblivious to this fact despite our yearlong
relationship.

I stood up and reached for her, but she pulled away. My outstretched
hand hung in the air between us.
“I only have eyes for you,” I insisted.
“Yeah, right.” If looks could kill, I’d already be six feet under.
“I don’t know what you want me to say.” Irritation crept into my voice.
“We have this fight every weekend, and it’s getting old.”
“You’re telling me it’s getting old?” She laughed, and a sour expression
took hold of her face. “You know what’s getting old? You and your Peter
Pan lifestyle. It’s time you got a real job and stopped trying to live out this
ridiculous rock star fantasy.”

“This is my real job. Between the band and bartending, I’m doing
alright for myself, and you know it. The band is only getting more popular.
We’re so close to a breakthrough. I can feel it.”
