Whispering Flames
harp, swirling metal pressed into my already raw palms. Focus found
me as I squeezed my eyes shut, tuning out the calming melody of
crackling fire and chirping tree frogs. The weight of my body against the
twig-infested dirt floated out of my awareness, as did the rest of my racing
thoughts.
“Ugh, don’t do that!” I snapped, as a hand brushed a wayward strand of
auburn hair out of my face, breaking my concentration once again.
“Will you be angry at me for eternity?” he questioned in a mellow tone.
“I’m not mad at you,” I countered, dropping my talisman onto my chest,
knowing we were about to get sidetracked yet again. I picked up the long,
crooked stick between us and stuck it into the flames, poking at them and
watching the early morning dew sizzle into the air above.
“Yes, you are. You are mad at who I am and where I come from,” he said.
Only his face and hands showed, but his skin glowed in the fire’s light.
“We’re not talking about this again. We need to focus.” I raised my voice,
not meeting his vibrant amber eyes. Their intense beauty made it impossible

to stay annoyed for long, so I avoided them altogether.
“We haven’t made any progress. I’m running out of patience… and
time,” I said, tossing the stick into the flames. My talisman made its way
back into my tender hands, but this time, I refrained from squeezing the
silver-trimmed emerald. I feared its intricate design was going to be
permanently imprinted into my hands if I gave in to my impulses.
“Well, I cannot focus when you look crazed, with hair wildly covering
your face and eyes. Your dishevelment is quite… distracting.” He leaned
back on his arm and gazed at the sky, almost as if it had been too much to
look at me. I hadn’t realized it was that bad.
“I am so sorry for being too much of a mess for you. I haven’t slept
for…” I paused to count the weeks.
“Four months.” He beat me to it. Clearly, he had been keeping track.
“Yes, since…” I trailed off, not wanting to get into it again.
“Eadric has finally returned home. I thought you should know,” he said
in a low tone. The fine hairs on the back of my neck rose. I closed my sore
eyes and took a deep breath before responding to him. I needed the time to
suppress my acidic bile. Just hearing that name made me want to scream
from the depths of my raw belly.
