“Looks like snow,” Vellora Witzel said.
Bev squinted at the dark sky above, a frigid, damp breeze billowing her
pants as she stood in the yard behind the butcher shop. “Pretty early for it.”
Although Vellora’s tall, muscular torso was wrapped in three large
sweaters, the butcher still didn’t look comfortable. “I hate this time of year. I
don’t do well in the cold. Give me warm, sunny skies over this slop any
day.”
“Well, if we’re in luck, it’ll hold off until the solstice,” Bev replied
optimistically. “Lots of folks on the road this time of year. Would hate for
them to get stuck in it.”
“Too true,” Vellora said, nodding to the Weary Dragon Inn in the
distance. “Packed house at the inn?”
“Well, it was last night, but everyone cleared out first thing this
morning,” Bev said. “Already this morning, a sweet, young couple with
three kids under five stopped in, as well as a nice gentleman who’s traveling
south.”
“Three under five?” Vellora shuddered. “And traveling?”
“I haven’t had a chance to chat with them much, but they seem nice
enough,” Bev said. “I thought the kids might like some beef stew tonight
with all this cold weather. Making a couple loaves of rosemary bread, too.”
Vellora’s face brightened. “Your plant’s growing that well?”
Bev nodded with a proud smile. “By leaps and bounds. Gotten so much
off it lately, and it’s nearly outgrowing the pot. If it wasn’t so darn cold, I’d
transplant it back into the garden. But I don’t want to risk anything
happening to it.”
Vellora nodded knowingly. A few weeks ago, during the annual Pigsend
Harvest Festival, Bev’s prized herb garden had been ransacked by a man in
search of powerful magical beings, with her beloved rosemary plant—the
key ingredient to her famous bread—totally eaten by a magical-detection
creature. But Ida, Vellora’s wife, had come to the rescue, having snipped off
a few pieces for her and her wife to enjoy—and one of those had taken root
and thrived under Bev’s watchful eye in a pot in her windowsill.
“So whadd’ya think? Four pounds of beef will do?” Vellora asked.
“Let’s make it six,” Bev said. “No telling who might show up tonight,
and the last thing I want is to have an inn full of hungry travelers without
enough to feed them all.”
“No arguments there,” Vellora said.
“Oh, before I forget,” Bev said. “Can you ask Ida if she’d like to help me
pick out a tree? I know she has opinions—”
“Too many,” Vellora said with a loving chuckle. “She’s out doing
deliveries right now, but when she gets back, I’ll let her know.” She
shivered. “Now let me get back inside before my fingers freeze off. Can’t be
wielding a knife if I don’t have digits, you know.”
