“Matt, I’m back and I need help with the groceries,” I called out as I
entered the house and headed to the kitchen with two bags in my hands.
I didn’t hear a reply, but I knew for a fact he heard me. With Matt, what
you got was a grunt here and there. I dropped the bags, and on my way out I
called out again. “If I am going to slave away because your friend is coming
over, the least you can do is help me carry in some groceries.”
Getting to the car I pulled out another bag. I heard it rip, shortly before
the contents spilled to the ground.

“Great.” I picked the remains from the ground, and tried to find where
they could fit into the other bags. I bent down to pick up the last can of
baked beans that rolled under the car.

“Finally, you sure took your sweet time,” I said as Matt’s footsteps
crunched on the gravel driveway. Standing up, I grabbed a bag, ready to
shove it in his hand, when I stopped in my tracks.
I gasped. It was not Matt that was looking back at me but the sole bane
of my existence. He towered above me by almost a foot. It was funny how
the line ‘I always knew this day would come’ from the movies came into my
head. I knew I would have to face him. I have known for more than a month
now, and I do work with his father after all. The first time I heard that he
was coming home, my heart clenched in pain before the panic set in, but it
was nothing compared to what I was feeling right now.

I thought about him a lot since Mr. Wilde told me he summoned him
home, but I did not think he was going to actually come, given that he
finished his active duty a year and a half ago but refused to come home.
He was dressed in dark jeans and a gray sweatshirt, with a neckline a
little too deep for my liking. Not because he didn’t look good, but because
he looked too good.
The fabric stretched over the bulging muscles of his arms, the sleeves
were pulled up to reveal a left arm with tattoos. He didn’t have that before.
He had gotten bigger, to the detriment of my thoughts. He had also grown a
beard, which seemed to go well with his hair.

He had always had long hair. He had to cut it often due to the fact that it
grew so fast. He had never worn it in this length before though, not long
enough for him to pack up into a bun at the back of his head.
