RETURNING
Antoine
“I know you don’t like being here.” Harper’s hand closes over
mine. I stare out of the airplane window, reluctant to meet
her eyes. Harper always sees what others don’t.
“I’m fine.” I squeeze her hand without turning. Below, the snowcapped
mountains of Spain’s Sierra Nevada gleam in the midday sun. They rarely
lose their mantle of white, even in midsummer. In April they are still
liberally covered. The airport is on the plains, in the modern part of the city,
which is as grim and industrial as any other twentieth-century urban center.
My eyes are fixed on the twin hills of the older part, divided by the river
Darro. On the eastern side of the valley the ancient palaces of the Alhambra
sprawl across one hillside.
On the other side, a tumble of whitewashed
houses mark the medieval suburb of the Albaicin. Both have origins dating
back to the Romans, though the height of their construction occurred after
the tenth century, when the Moorish kings ruled Granada and built the
magnificent Nasrid palaces that are still the centerpiece of the Alhambra.
“I wish we could have held the twins’ party in Mississippi.” I turn at the
note of longing in Harper’s voice. The midmorning light turns her long
auburn curls to blazing fire.
“You know that is impossible.” I touch her face, tracing the porcelain
features frozen into eternal perfection. Her beauty catches my breath, even
now, over twenty years since we met, but it is in the emerald depths of her
eyes that I am truly lost. Immortal bodies might remain untouched by the
ravages of time, but the eyes always betray the soul within. Harper has seen
more of death and trial than most humans could ever know. Yet still she
loves fiercely and without compromise.
At least she does now. What if the worst is yet to come? Will I be forced
to watch the light fade from those eyes, replaced by the emptiness of an
eternity lived without our twins?
I push away the traitorous thoughts and force a smile. “The Marigny
family name might have been temporarily restored to some form of
normality when the girls were young. But even if we could feasibly present
them to Deepwater Hollow again as adults without too much remark,
nothing can explain away the fact that you and I haven’t aged a day. People
were already beginning to look at us askance when we left for France.”
“I know that.” Harper looks away from me, her tone resigned. “I
understand why we had to leave, just as I understood when we left France,
and later, Italy. Just as I understand why we don’t make friends in England,
and why the girls have chosen to live here.” She turns back to me, her eyes
sad and full of love all at once. “But understanding doesn’t make it any
easier to accept.”
