Valerian Sommers had retired as a mercenary almost a decade ago. Once

One day a gorgeous young man had sauntered into his shop, invoked the
name of the Witch and the King of Arnsveld, and paid Valerian with a hot
mouth and pure gold. He left again before Valerian could fully recover
himself. The shop suddenly seemed like a blessing and a curse—it had
drawn a beautiful, flitting butterfly into Valerian’s midst, but it also held
him in place like a sticky trap, preventing him from chasing after Penn to
find out more about him. Valerian couldn’t just leave his life’s work behind
—it might not be there when he returned.
The next time Penn walked into his shop, he spoke of his friendship with
the King of Bellacosta and a fight against a mage who gave even Valerian
