Priest
I couldn’t see past the crimson veil swarming over my eyes. I’d spent
years trying to hide my torrid past, square dancing with the devil as he did his
best to corrupt me. Always eluding the clawed hands and decaying fingers
wishing to take me down to Hell where I truly belonged.
I didn’t even recognize the man in the mirror anymore. He was a false
representation of the man I should’ve been—the man I wanted to be with
every fiber of my existence.
Temptation was an easy mistress to fall victim too, and I’d learn quickly
how to side-step her advances. But all it took was one blood-soaked woman
to show up on my doorstep, barely hanging onto her life as she collapsed at
my feet, silently begging me to kill her or to cleanse her of the sins that were
dragging her down to make me question everything again.
The club had done a number on Shasta, confusing the poor woman to a
point of madness. I never expected her to attempt to take her life in this way,
but here she was, wrists sliced perfectly down the vein, bleeding out in the
middle of a rainstorm.
I wasn’t sure how she found my house. Nobody knew where I called
home—this place I called my sanctuary. A place to hide away from the chaos
Sabbath brought down on us all.
“Shasta?” I shouted, dropping to my knees, trying to decipher why she
chose me, of all people, to come to.
“Come on, Shasta. I got you.” My body groaned as her weight sagged
against me. I wasn’t the strongest man, but I was considered the deadliest.
“Just let me die,” she murmured. Her eyes were clouded over with guilt,
and she seemed to be fading away faster than I could handle. “Please,” she
whispered. “I deserve—” Her eyes rolled, and my heart started hammering
inside my chest.
“You’re not done yet,” I whispered, lifting her up toward God, begging
him to save her. I carried her up the stairs, hoping I wasn’t too late. “God
brought you to my doorstep for a reason, Shasta, and I think you’ve been sent
here for me to save you.”
Her silence made my insides clench. She was leaving the earthly plane for
the warmth of his arms.
Once inside, I placed her on my couch, quickly grabbing whatever I could
to stop the bleeding. My medical background was limited at best, but I knew
how to dress a wound, and I wasn’t about to let her die—her tainted soul
perfect for the devil to devour. No. This woman deserved to be saved, and I
was just the man to revive her.
Within minutes, I had her wrists wrapped, but I was still clueless as to
what I should do next.
Save her.
