LIAM
The view of Vancouver out my office window was so breathtaking, it was a
wonder I ever got anything done. This time of the morning, with the sun
glinting off the tops of the buildings, everything cast in gold with a pink and
orange sky behind it, I found it difficult to concentrate on my computer
screen.

This was about the only time of day when there was something
interesting to see out the window. The rest of the time, it was nothing but an
industrial area with manmade structures jutting out of an asphalt jungle.
As the angle of light hitting the buildings shifted, I found it easier to
return my gaze to the computer, pushing aside the idea that I only got to visit
beautiful natural landscapes but never got to linger for long. My eyes went to
the clock in the right corner of the screen about the time that I heard my
brother’s distinctive footsteps in the hallway. It was about time Kameron
arrived at work.

“Good morning, baby brother,” he said, razzing me as he deposited a cup
of coffee on my desk. I chose to forgive him for being annoying since he’d
gotten my order right. “How’s it going?”
“It’s going,” I told him. Taking a sip, I let the hazelnut aroma wash over
me and savored the taste for a moment. “Thanks for this.”
He shrugged. “Gotta do something to make sure you’re awake and fully
functioning.”

“Hey, you’re the one who’s ten minutes late.” If he was going to poke
me, I had to poke right back. In my family, one learned that early. Otherwise,
they got eaten alive. We all loved each other, but that didn’t mean we were
always polite.

Kameron chuckled and brushed back his shaggy dark hair, which was the
same color and a similar cut to my own. His hazel eyes, also the same color
as mine, twinkled with mischief. “As I recall, you’re leaving early today,
right? On a Friday? I don’t think you have room to talk about me being late
because I stopped to grab you a coffee.”

“All right, you got me there,” I told him. “But it’s not like I’m jetting
away for the weekend to visit a tropical beach. Damn, that sounds nice,
though.” I swiveled around in my chair so I could see him better as he sank
down into one of the chairs across from my desk.
“What’s this place you’re visiting again? Sunnydale or some shit?” he
asked, taking a drink of his coffee and making a face at the bitter taste. I
didn’t know why he insisted on drinking it black when he clearly didn’t like
it.

“It’s called Sun Valley Lodge,” I corrected him. “It’s a nice mom-andpop place. The numbers definitely lean in our favor. They’re fully booked
most of the season, especially around the holidays. We can make our money
back really quickly on this one.”
