IT KEPT PACE WITH ME as I ran. The doctor had tried to explain something
called an ocular migraine. I wanted to believe that’s what kept pace with
me, but they didn’t haunt sufferers the way this thing held tight to me. I
splashed through another deep puddle. The thick fog of the November
morning muffled the world except for the slap of my trainers on tarmac and
my breath pumping in and out of my chest.
This wet cotton wool weather had hugged the moor for days and nights,
rolling in off the sea and staying. Since its arrival, the black shadow
keeping me company seemed to grow stronger. At first, I’d ignored it,
which was back in September, then we went to the doctor who seemed to
wonder what all the fuss was about. During October the vague shadow
began to grow stronger, and a sense of dread trailed along in its wake.
That’s when I finally admitted it might not be a mental problem. It was
probably a ghostly problem. I just didn’t know what to do about it.
Heather joked the Beast of Exmoor had me in its nose. I didn’t find that
funny after my experiences with Tommy. Losing my closest friend, aged
twelve, during a night spent hunting the Beast in our local wood marred me
for life. I’d never recovered from Tommy’s disappearance thirty years ago.
Being alone didn’t help. I missed Heather. The Army Reservists took up
a lot of her time and I’d realised I didn’t want her to finish her initial
training period and sign up for the long haul. I felt rotten about it, and
hadn’t mentioned it to her, because the whole thing had been my idea. The
genuine possibility of another war lay on the horizon, and I didn’t want that
life for Heather.
Knowing she’d be riding back from Taunton through this fog didn’t help
my anxiety. I’d gone for a run, not only to relax but also to stop me from
riding over to fetch her back. Being over-protective tended to land me in a
cauldron of very hot water.
Coming to the end of the run, I pushed on, trying to hit maximum speed.
The shadow thing kept pace, morphing and shifting through the thick white
surrounding us, only visible because of the colour contrast. Its dog-like
behaviour unnerved me. I’d grown used to the spooks at last, but this thing
seemed to track me in a way that defied nature. Supernatural or prosaic.
Over the last few weeks, it wasn’t just the shadow I’d noticed. Other
things had also changed on the moor, and it made me edgy. Sometimes, I
caught an odd scent on the moorland, bitter and musky, like rotten meat
being burnt over an open fire. A herd of deer I’d be stalking would take
flight. Or the ponies would bolt for no reason when they sniffed the air
around me. Like I had something sticking to me. Whatever it was, I feared
it growing stronger.
Heather had laughed at first, saying it must be because of Halloween
coming up.
