“How’s it going being back in South Carolina?” Steph asks. “Any disasters
yet?”
Most people might think my friend was referring to something minor
like breaking a heel or flooding a bathroom but like me, Steph was in the
field of Emergency Management. For us, disasters were hurricanes and fires
and earthquakes. We focused on planning for the worst case scenario. We
talked about pandemics, solar flares, and nuclear attacks with the casualness
most people saved for discussing the latest TV show they were bingeing.

“No, we’re just planning for Hurricane Awareness Week and reviewing
and updating all the community emergency preparedness plans.”
With six coastal counties bordering the Atlantic Ocean and over two
hundred miles of coastline, my state was particularly vulnerable to the
hurricanes that rushed along the coast for several months each year.

“Some of the plans are super out of date and the governor has asked that
I help get them updated and offer training on how to implement the new
plans. I’m on my way to Magnolia Point to set up a planning task force that
I can turn over to local officials when I’ve got it running,” I told my friend.

“In fact, I’m in the car heading up there right now.”
“Magnolia Point? Why does that sound familiar?” Steph asked.
“Because I grew up here. My parents still live in Magnolia Point so I’m
going to stay with them while I’m in town and save the state some money
on hotel costs.”

Being named as the State Emergency Management Director for South
Carolina was a dream come true for me. In my role I reported directly to the
governor, and I was in charge of all disaster related planning and emergency
response. It was a hard job with enormous responsibility, but after more
than twenty years working in this field, I was thrilled to be one of the few
females who were State Directors. Steph was one of the others. She
headed emergency management work in her home state of Colorado, where
she lived with her new husband Christopher.

“Hopefully your mother doesn’t drive you too crazy,” Steph laughed.
Steph and I had spent a lot of time together working in disaster shelters
and out in the field, so we both knew each other’s histories, including the
fact that as much as I loved my mother, her old-fashioned ideas about what
women should do drove me crazy.

“If she does, I can always check into a rental,” I said. “Magnolia Point
has always attracted a lot of tourists because of its proximity to both the
lake and the ocean so there’s lots of cool places to stay.”

I saw the sign for Magnolia Point and signaled to change lanes.
“I’m gonna let you go, but I’ll call you later and let you know how
things are going,” I told my friend.

“Sounds good.”
I drove down the main street of Magnolia Point, rubbernecking like a
tourist as I noted which businesses were still in operation and which were
new. I rolled down the window and inhaled the fresh air, tinged with a hint
of the nearby ocean.
