Creating a portal between two locations remained the hardest form of magic
I’d ever attempted. Yet here I was, standing in front of eager dragons,
humans, and even some Havians, trying my best to open another.
While I had done this several times in the last few months, I never felt
any calmer about it. I was terrified that I would screw it up and tear people
apart when they tried to use it. Or I’d send them to the right place, but a
hundred yards too high or too low.
So many elements of this could go wrong.
Still, I did my best to focus on where I wanted to portal to, a room in a
nearby Havian hive. It was one of a few portals that didn’t connect dragons
and humans in their cities as much as it connected the sentient creatures on
Havilah to dragons who could help protect them.
We had been communicating with them much better since we’d realized
that they thought a lot like my sphynx, Matraphiel. I couldn’t think about
him right now, however.
I closed my eyes for a few seconds to better visualize where the portal
would come out and forced magic into the growing whirlpool of light ahead
of me. It didn’t want to create a connection at first.
Thankfully, I was used to how this felt. It took some effort to get the
portal to establish in the first place, like breaking through the surface of
water. While we could use enough force with ease most of the time, if you
watched some small creatures, they skated across the top, unable to break
through.
Portals were a lot like water if we were the size of the bugs that could
walk on the unbroken skin. I had to work hard and make myself a lot
stronger to get through. Each time, I wondered if I was pushing too hard
and it was resisting because I couldn’t get through, but each time, I
eventually managed it.
This was no different. I poured magic in, creating pressure until I felt it
burst and push through. Then, the portal finished forming and stabilized. I
let go and stared at the horizon in front of me. A circle stood in the middle
of the room, shimmering in the light. It would let Havians, humans,
dragons, and whatever other species that tried to go through it travel to
another location.
Douglas and Matraphiel came forward as if they were going to step
through it first, but I was prepared for that. I reached out a hand and foot,
stopping them in their tracks.
“I should go through first.” I took a deep breath and tried to summon the
courage.
“You always say that,” Kryos replied, also coming forward.
It finished giving me the courage I needed. If I didn’t go through the
portal, he would. I knew his reasoning. We’d talked about it a lot, but I still
felt the same way.
