Maddie
Shit, shit, shit!” I run down the stairs and see the train leaving the
platform. My train. The same one I had to be on if I wanted any
chance of making it to work on time.
I sit down on the counter and wait the five minutes it takes for the next
train to arrive. I jump on, my hope of getting a seat squashed the minute I
step through the doors. Just like my body, as I squeeze my way inside and
grab on to the metal bar. I spend the next forty minutes standing between a
sweaty, overweight, middle-aged man and a hipster teen whose music is
blaring so loud out of his headphones it’s giving me a headache.
As soon as the train arrives at my stop, I push my way through the doors.
I look at my watch—my crappy Walmart watch that is held together with an
elastic band wrapped around it. It doesn’t really matter though. Even if it
were a fancy expensive timepiece, it’d still say the same thing.
I’m late.
“Fuck it,” I mumble to myself, running back up the stairs. I’m just going
to have to leg it. So what if I turn up covered in sweat? I need this job. I can’t
be late. Gripping the strap of my bag on my shoulder, I rush down the
sidewalk, doing my best to avoid bumping into the herd of foot traffic.
Ten minutes later, while panting for breath, I finally see the finish line.
Grind the Bean, the coffee shop in Midtown Manhattan where I work the
morning shift. My afternoons are set aside for Lilah, my little sister,
whenever she doesn’t have treatment. She spends three days a week at the
dialysis clinic. My best friend and sister from another mister, Gia, takes Lilah
to all of her appointments, while my nights are spent working at a dive bar
two blocks down from our crappy little apartment in Brooklyn.
If you asked me two years ago what I’d be doing at the ripe old age of
twenty-one, it wouldn’t have been being the sole caregiver to my fifteen-
year-old sister. I never imagined that Lilah and I would be orphans. But here
we are, and there’s no use crying over the crappy cards we’ve been dealt. It
won’t bring my mom and dad back, and it won’t heal my sister.
I just have to keep going, keep looking for a way to afford her treatment
and find her a new kidney. That last one I’ll admit feels a little out of my
control. It’s not like I can just go and harvest an organ for her. Trust me, I’ve
thought about it.
