Jett
After a two-hour bike ride, Jett Jones finally screeched to a halt at the bottom
of Oak Brook Hill. His leather-clad ass was numb, and the noise of his
motorbike caused annoyed glances from the two grey-haired ladies walking
past him on the old, cobbled streets. He grinned at them in a way that would
cause most old ladies to run away. Luckily for them, they couldn’t see the cold
expression hidden behind his helmet.
He studied the main road within the small town. It was the local hub for
the local shops and business. He’d studied the town a lot—over the last year in
particular—and knew Oak Brook was a quiet place. It wasn’t the type of town
that enjoyed the roar of a good bike. That also meant it was too easy to catch
people’s attention as a biker, and in a place like this he’d do better to keep
quiet. Then again, he was trying to draw attention from the most ruthless
family in the town.
His stomach growled, and he rested one large hand against the cool leather
of his jacket. Before he began his hunt for the Romanos, he needed food. None
of the restaurants he’d passed were open this early in the morning—it wasn’t
even eight a.m.. He looked across the road and saw a bakery housed in an old
two-storey cottage with a roof that wasn’t quite straight. Its front door was
partially open, letting out the soft smells of fresh bread and pastries. A sign
above the door read ‘Dawn of the Bread’. He smiled.
Perfect.
His stomach growled again as he climbed off his bike and pulled up the
visor of his helmet. There was no point taking it off yet. It was too soon to let
anyone recognise him. The elderly ladies were still glancing at him and
muttering to each other as they continued past his bike and down toward the
end of the hill. He ignored the temptation to wind them up further by revving
the bike, and crossed the quiet road into the bakery.
A bell above his head jingled annoyingly as he pushed the front door all the
way open. It was deceptively spacious inside. Though the walls were painted a
strange dark red, almost blood-like. A black counter ran across the far wall,
where there was a glass display case.
His stomach grumbled louder as he stared
at the food on display and the smells became so much stronger. But when he
stepped forward he saw that the tempting biscuits were shaped like spiders
and skeletons, and the pastries were shaped like wrapped mummies. What the
hell kind of weird place had he walked into?
He froze when he looked up at what was behind the dark counter. A short
woman stood with her profile turned away from him. Thick black hair ran in
waves down her back, almost to the curve of her hip. It somehow made him
want to reach out to her, and he had to resist the urge to feel how soft it was.
