Air left her lungs as Ali slammed onto the compact dirt floor. Gasping,
she rolled to her side and coughed, sending loose dirt sputtering from her
lips. She could concede this match and save herself from bruises, or worse,
a broken bone. Except she hadn’t landed one punch. The kid had bested her
again.
Ali forced herself upright, cradling her ribs. Fifteen feet away, her
eight-year-old opponent grinned. Sawyer was half her age and scrawny,
with close cropped black hair, dark skin, and brilliant blue eyes set above a
smattering of freckles. In a word—the picture of innocence. A deception if
ever she saw one. The kid’s abilities surpassed everyone in the house.
“Another point for me!” Sawyer’s giddy voice bounced off the black
training mats that lined the basement walls.
Brushing dirt from her sweaty tank top, Ali set her feet in a wide
stance and exhaled, summoning magic. Cool air swirled around her right
hand, the tingling sensation growing in her fingers as she conjured
concentrated air the diameter of a softball, the pressure tightening against
her palm until it was firm. Then she threw the orb—an attack called gaoth
—at Sawyer’s chest.
He dove from its path.
The sphere flew across the room, colliding with the wall. It erupted
into a white puff.
“Sloppy.”
Ali glared at Malvina, their no-nonsense trainer. Today she
showcased her blue warrior physic of rippling muscles, braided sky-blue
hair, and enormous green eyes. Malvina was Fae. A race of fairies
representing every spectrum of the rainbow, and in Malvina’s case, she
resembled a blueberry. Of course, anytime Malvina left the house, she
projected human skin tones—or the humans might freak out.
“Again,” Malvina said.
Ali squared her feet once more, preparing to attack. She’d battled
the creatures that go “bump” in the night. She would never allow herself to
be vulnerable again. And, well, her ego couldn’t withstand these continual
losses to Sawyer.
Determined, she called forth magic until her hands vibrated, then
unleashed gaoth the width of a basketball. In answer, Sawyer thrust his
hands skyward. A pillar of dirt shot from the floor, creating an impressive
shield. The ball of air collided with the pillar; the impact resulting in a dusty
brown firework. Soil flew every direction, covering Sawyer in a tan mist.
“Blah.” Sawyer gagged, scraping at his tongue with his fingers.
“Dirt got in my mouth!” He rushed toward the side of the room and
scooped up his water bottle, gurgling the contents.
“Point!” Ali yelled.
Sawyer spun on her and spat water onto the floor. “I blocked the
assault!”
Smug, Ali pointed to where the practice area ended, and the
concrete basement floor began. “You stepped out of bounds.”
He frowned and rinsed out his mouth again, spitting.
“Bé Chuille, please respect this training facility,” Malvina chastised,
though there was little threat behind her words.
The kid always got off easy.
If Ali had spit on the floor, Malvina would’ve punished her with
push-ups this very minute. Sawyer, however, was handled with compassion.
Malvina had assumed a motherly affection for him since his father passed.
