My sister Bug scowled at me. She was tiny but formidable.
“I just think you’re drinking too much,” she said.
Also, she was unreasonably judgmental most of the time.
Don’t get me wrong. I loved her more than anything. She was a pisser, the
kind of strong woman who forged her own path. I was pretty sure she could
command most dudes with a glance, and she was generally cooler and more
together than me, but she just didn’t get that what I was feeling couldn’t be
shrugged off. She wanted to pretend that my dreams weren’t crushed under
the weight of a center forward in the second period of an otherwise innocuous
soccer match, but I couldn’t
She and her boyfriend Jack, who also happened to be my best friend,
insisted on spending the summer in Martha’s Vineyard. They were supposed
to be on their trip of a lifetime, sailing around the world like heathens. But
instead, they were camping out in the marina, running summer sailing
charters and pestering me.
“A man is allowed to get drunk, Bug.” My words were slurred but only a
little bit. Fuck it, I was wasted.
“It’s just a little too much…” She had the same tone of voice our mother
had when she was worried. I decided to stop listening.
She droned on for a bit, a spitfire-y version of the schoolmarm from the
Peanuts cartoons, until I bitterly interjected, “Jesus, give me a break. I’m
having a good time. Don’t be a fucking killjoy.”
Bug huffed. Then, she shoved her hands into her jean pockets before
saying, “I’m actually worried.”
Jack appeared behind her, a solid wall for her to lean against. She took
what he was offering, stepping back from me just a smidge so that she could
be closer to him. I hated that my sister was upset. I hated that I couldn’t stop
acting like an ass, but I couldn’t. Mostly, because I didn’t want to. So, I said,
“If you’d mind your own fucking business, then you wouldn’t have to be
concerned.”
Jack, who was the definition of tall and imposing, got taller when he
defended my sister. He growled at me, “Don’t be a dick.“
They were a team, which was fine. We used to be a trio, and when they
got together, they worried that I’d be annoyed, but what kind of a man
wouldn’t want the best guy he knew to fall for his sister. Still, they couldn’t
pretend that we were still a trio – they had each other and I had my own shit.
So, I rolled my eyes at them and haphazardly issued my annoyed version of
goodbye in their direction.
“I going to fucking bed, losers.” With that, I turned and headed up the
few steps into the tiny cottage I’d rented in Edgartown for the summer. In my
wake Bug pleaded, but I didn’t look back.
