“Let me cut it. Just a trim.”
“Liar. You don’t do things by halves.”
Isn’t that the truth. She’d already mangled my hair into something
suitable for an office setting. Cleaning up the rest of me simply added
insult to a monstrous amount of injury that remained as unhealed inside as it
was on the out.
“You’re right. All of it, it is.” Her cheery voice grated on my already
frayed nerves.

“Always all in,” I grumbled as I caught my nurse’s wrist, the bones so
fine that old me might have crushed them in a single squeeze, though I
never would have.
Never did I expect to miss the strength that came with daily training,
years of keeping myself fit, able to outrun the juniors Rangers who came
through the office, and who sometimes stayed.
Small things I never knew I would miss until I couldn’t do them any
longer.

That’s what my illustrious decade plus Texas Ranger career earned me:
a twelve-inch scar down the side of my face and neck from a bomb not
meant for me set by a psychopath, a medal I couldn’t stand the sight of, and
a sassy as fuck nurse who wouldn’t leave me alone.

“Stop bitching, Ranger, or I’ll think you’re getting precious on me. Sit
still. Now, Mr Damek,” Sammy Koltas scolded as though I were a six year
old boy rather than a ruined man at thirty-eight with a full twelve inches to
match my scar on her five-foot four-inch height.

I stayed stock still as the tiny blonde woman–well, blonde this week–
approached me with a bare razor blade she waved in a faintly threatening
manner. While her posture remained aggressive, her eyes were kind, and a
hint of sadness tainted their pretty sky blue. I instantly hated that look and
added her sympathy to my shit-pile of self-loathing.

While I didn’t need a nurse 24/7 any longer, and returned to my home,
there were plenty of things I couldn’t do, and Sammy was with me more
often than I was alone.
Considering the dark direction my thoughts often took, that was a
blessing.

“I don’t want to cut you,” she murmured, hyper focused on making a
Sammy Koltas branded topiary of the scraggly mass that currently
overpopulated my chin.
“Not like I’ll feel it if you do.” I stared at a point on the wall over her
head.

A full time job that, studying walls. I could do a Masters in it.
Sammy tsked me. “Balls up, buddy.” Her eyes were still full of that
sadness I couldn’t stand.

I grabbed for the razor, but my shoulder didn’t want to play ball. Blood
dripped from the thumb I sucked as I glared at her. “If I can’t shave myself,
how the fuck am I supposed to run a whole unit of elite Rangers?”
“With three newbies turning up,” she reminded me with a soft smile.

I groaned. “Fuck me. I forgot about them.”
“Rhys believes in you. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have insisted on
promoting you.”
“Archer promoted me out of sympathy. Much like you do, this
because–”
