“You know what I love about you, little Rainbow? You never stop
smiling. Now, what flavor of ice cream would you like?” Mrs.
Canetti, my employer for the next two weeks, patted me on the top
of my head like a puppy.
“Mint chocolate chip, thank you,” I replied with a smile, even if it was
slightly forced. And not because she was being patronizing, as usual.
I was about to burst into laughter, and trying not to make eye contact
with the four children I was nannying, who were right behind their mom.
All of them were making the most grotesque faces to see if they could get
me to crack, and had bet me an extra hour past bedtime that night that they
could make me laugh.
I had a feeling I was done for. I smiled all the time, maybe even too
much, and laughed way too easily. And their faces were ridiculously cute,
even with crossed eyes and scrunched-up noses.
I bit the inside of my cheek, then shook my head the tiniest bit. Not
today, little demons, I mouthed when Mrs. Canetti turned back to the ice
cream vendor, asking for five children’s cones.
She spoke to him in Italian, which was close enough to the Spanish I’d
taken in high school to make out most of the words. She was telling him I
was her daughter, and that I was thirteen.
Suddenly, I had no urge to laugh at all.
Thirteen was five years shy of my actual age, but it wasn’t that
ridiculous on her part. What was ridiculous was a multi-millionaire arguing
to save a few pennies.
The ice cream man glanced skeptically over at me. He pointed to the
sign on the side of his truck, which indicated that the cheaper ice cream was
only for those thirteen and under. “You child?”
I was four inches shorter than her own daughter, who actually was
thirteen and unlike me, had been blessed by the puberty fairy. At only five
feet tall, I still wore an A-cup bra—not that I needed one—and had almost
no curves to speak of. Even my features were tiny, and I’d been told I
looked like an elf and a fairy more times than I could count.
I smiled even wider, nodding, but I was dying inside.
The Canettis had hired me as their betasitter to accompany them on
their family vacation to San Francisco, and then on a small boat cruise to go
whale-watching. What I hadn’t realized was that Mrs. Canetti had registered
me at the hotel as her daughter, so she could slip me in without paying for
me, and without getting me my own room.
It didn’t bear mentioning that my meals were always off the children’s
menus. If I never saw another chicken nugget in my life, it would be too
soon.
I hadn’t complained. I wasn’t rich, but I’d betasat for enough affluent
families during high school to know that millionaires loved to save money
almost as much as spend it. Especially when it came to “the help.”
She’d fully committed to the petty fraud, even taking me to a hairstylist
