Virgin Mimosas
Percy
I sa across from Madeline at the table, both of us sandwiched between
angry, brooding men.
Well—angry, brooding demigods and monsters.
I drummed my fingertips on the cold oak top as I listened to Orpheus
and Damon argue. The two of them were going in circles once again over
the missing knife. We all believed someone had stolen it, but no one was
certain who the thief was.
Damon was the leader of the Cerberus branch, run with Minos and
Aaecus. The three of them made up the massive monster. Orpheus was the
leader of his own branch, a demigod that was just as bad as the two that had
died recently.
Hercules and Jason.
I couldn’t say I missed either one of them. For years, I’d been the only
female demigod at the table. It was a nice change when Serena and Ashley
were present.
“Someone has stolen the knife,” Orpheus snarled, slamming his fist
down. The table rattled. “The knife that belonged to me. A gift from my
father! From a god!”
Ian growled, leaning forward in his seat next to Damon. “You know,
you don’t need to remind us that your father is a god every time we fucking
meet, Orpheus. Nothing has changed in the last few centuries.”
Orpheus sneered. “Just reminding you of your place, monster.”
I rolled my eyes.
The Three Fates Mafia didn’t run itself. And the leaders were a ragtag
group of rejects that the Fates had forced together into one city, made to
share our broken toys. It had never been my favorite solution, but it kept
both sides from destroying one another.
Things were slowly changing. Over the last couple years, monsters and
demigods had come together, shaking up my belief that we could never be.
The three men that made up Cerberus were mated to the demigod Ashley.
Ian, the Colchian Dragon, was mated to the demigod Serena, and their
human partner.
It was the dawn of a new era.
My gaze slid to Madeline’s. Even behind her sunglasses, I could feel the
mischief and amusement there. Both of us had become accustomed to
letting the men go round and round until we got bored.
The ceiling fan creaked. It smelled like sweat. I glanced down the table,
wishing that Serena and Ashley were here, but they’d entrusted their
monstrous husbands to vouch for them, which left me with an old, crusty,
Theseus and an even older Orpheus.
Theseus looked like he was half asleep, his eyes narrow slits as he
listened to Orpheus bellow.
It felt like old times without the newer demigods here, and not in a good
way. Cerberus and the Colchian Dragon were unbalanced without their
mates, and their fury was bleeding into the room.
The shouting match began. I sighed, leaning back in my seat. I tuned
them out.
Orpheus’ sacred knife was missing, the same one that Jason had driven
into my leg. On stormy days like today, it still ached. It was hard to tell if it
was genuine pain or just my mind focusing on the blade. I guessed that was
part of getting older—but for an immortal demigod like me; it was strange.
