Lia
“Has Eve Darrow sent a reply yet?”
The click of Lia Vallyse’s heels echoed through the sunlit atrium,
adding punctuation to the question. The tempo of her steps echoed
her quickened heartbeat. Worry had been her companion since her sudden
departure from Darkegrove, for Eve, of course, but also for her own family.
Every one of the gilded halls of Sunholde were a sight to behold on
sunny days, but none shone brighter than the great atrium. The floors, white
marble veined with gold, were opulent, and polished to mirror shine at all
times. The walls bore little decoration save for a small number of portraits
of past rulers, each held by a gilded frame that perfectly complimented the
white wallpaper, hand-painted with tiny sunbursts in the trademark gold of
her house.
Her ancestors had certainly intended to impress their neighbors, human
and fae alike.
“Not yet, Highness,” came Alfie’s muffled reply. He was still holding
the thin book under his chin as he shuffled papers in his hands, struggling to
keep up with her brisk strides.
Lia slowed her pace. The poor man would suffocate himself on the book
her father had requested, an old scholar’s notes about fae ruins in
Darkegrove, in his effort to be of help with her task. She had no idea why
he’d suddenly taken an interest in ancient fae kingdoms north of Avellon, as
his field of study had primarily remained within their own borders in the
past.
Perhaps Eve and her decision to change her own kingdom’s history had
something to do with that, she mused.
Or, she thought, frowning, it had something to do with the prophecy he’s
been so obsessed with that he sent me to warn Riona Darrow.
That visit should have extended through Eve’s coronation, but her return
had been requested sooner by an urgent message arriving in the wee hours
one morning. There hadn’t even been time to say goodbye. King Aldrich
Vallyse had taken ill and she had been recalled to be at her father’s side, but
also to be prepared should the worst occur and she needed to ascend to the
throne.
So far he had held on, but the healers had little hope for his recovery.
“Please let me carry something for you, Alfie,” she offered, not for the
first time.
“I couldn’t possibly, Your Highness,” came the expected reply. He
shuffled the papers once more, finally arranging them in an order he
deemed correct, and tucked them neatly against the book now resting in his
hand. “I’ve got it now.”
Before coming to live at Sunholde and serving the ruling family of
Avellon, Alfie Barre had been a scholar, studying the ancient fae. For years,
Alfie had served faithfully as her father’s secretary and personal librarian,
his experience and interest in the long-lost fae no doubt having intrigued the
young king with his own near obsession with the subject.
