DOMENICO
The explosion was still ringing in my ears, making everything seem
shrill and tinny. My mansion’s cool, dark interior greeted me when I
opened my eyes. That was good. It meant my second in command had
taken us somewhere safe, although if Lucifer knew where my penthouse
was, he might also know about the mansion. The sick jolt of teleportation
was still lingering in the pit of my stomach, making me feel queasy and
unsettled, but I didn’t have even a moment to waste.

I had to act as fast as I
could to make sure that Natasha and I were safe. Natasha’s hand was warm
in mine, and I gave it a reassuring squeeze before I went over to the wall
and flipped the light switch. The angular chrome and glass chandelier
blazed to life, illuminating the sleek, modern room.
“Zander,” I barked out. “Go and get us some guards as quickly as
physically possible. I need this place secured and locked down immediately.
And call Manning, tell him to go to the penthouse and report back on the
damage.”

Zander hesitated for a moment then spoke up, “You want me to send
Manning into that? The site of a recent explosion? Is that even safe? When
Lucifer bombed your nightclub, he set off two charges. What if there’s
another explosion?” His face had gone pinched and pale, and I could tell he
was beginning to spiral. I had to ease him out of it quickly before he could
go down that train of thought any further.

I sighed. “I know he’s important to you, but we have to risk it. We need
all the information we can get, and we need someone to check for casualties
and get people out if necessary. Besides, he can make shields for himself
that will protect him from any rubble or additional bombings. He’ll be safer
than anyone else would be.” I clapped Zander on the shoulder. “I’m sorry,
but this is necessary. He’s the best man for the job.”

Zander screwed his eyes shut for a long moment then nodded and let out
a sigh that sounded completely exhausted. “You’re right. Of course, you’re
right. I’ll tell him,” he said, sounding as if he was trying to convince
himself as much as me.
“I’ll add this to the list of reasons why I owe you two plenty of time off
once the Lucifer situation is dealt with,” I said.

Zander gave me a wan smile. If we survive, hung in the air between us,
although I left the words unsaid. He gave me a quick little salute and
teleported away with a pop of displaced air.
With that done, I turned to Natasha, as I’d been longing to do from the
moment we arrived at the mansion.
